The stock 5mt will deffinately do that (at least my '02), but the one I drove home today definately won't.
I'm not meaning to pick on the things, I am just curious whether the one I have for the day is representative of all of them, or if it has been 'slowed down' by the dealership.
Mexicanpizza & Lurk,
I hadn't considered the 04 ECU issue. I didn't imagine it could be that huge a difference. Interesting....

I'm happy with mine too. Sometimes i wish i had a 5mt but other times im glad i didn't.
Nothing a few mods can't fix. I guess you could get a better TC if you owned one.

i think what people are referring to is that the '04 ECU has some sort of delay when going from closed loop fuel to open loop causing performance to be crappy. most reflashes get rid of that.
there IS a TCU, Transmission Control Unit on the 4EAT cars, and it's also adaptive. not only does disconnecting the battery and killing the power reset the ECU, but it also resets the TCU which will give you quick hard shifts for about a day. anyone know if there's a fuse that can be pulled to reset the TCU and not the ECU?

Russ, are "reflash" and "reset" synonymous? I had always thought of reflashing as something done by guys like Vishnu.
Would resetting the ECU eliminte that glitch??

reflashing (as in EcuTek, AccessPort, AccessECU) an '04 ECU will get rid of a lot of the suckiness they have.
when I say reset, i mean killing power to it and letting it loose all the "learning" and "adapting" that it's done. after driving in stop and go traffic, the WRX TCU tends to continue shifting soft and slow even when driving aggressively. by pulling the negative terminal, it resets the TCU, but also resets the ECU (which I don't want to do). I'm hoping there's a fuse that can kill power to just the TCU for a couple of minutes.

Try manually shifting the auto. I do it all the time. Especially when out on a spirited drive. And the auto will throw you back in your seat even without the launch. Gotta love having an upgraded turbo.
