Wingless Im not sure if im misunderstanding what you just said or if I wasnt clear with my first post. Im saying why doesnt vishnu just develop a set of flash paramaters that they can then just upload to a wrx that will allow it to pass a smog test. This of course wouldnt be a free service.

Okay, my fault - I misunderstood you, but I can answer this one anyway.

With Vishnu's Stage Subzero up through Stage 1, cars with the reflash should pass the sniffer easily. This is because Shiv does not alter ignition or fuel maps for idle or cruise conditions. Not so sure about Stage 2 with the VF30 and bigger injectors. I have the Stage 0 reflash and I'm not concerned at all about the sniffer, just the visual.

with my experiences, as others have said before:

It is true what was said about making sure your car is nice and warmed up before the test, get that cat hot.....

second, you will pass emissions with as little as one cat....My truck (Chevy Tahoe, 350Ci) only has one Catco hi-flow cat, and it passes with flying colors.

Thirdly.....the main problem you have to worry about is the visual inspection....one time I had passed the emissions test, but had been failed on the visual inspection because I was missing a friggin hose clamp for the hot air pickup tube for cold starts....THATS IT

but then again, THAT all depends on the shop you go to, and if the technician is having a good day or not (if he wants to be a tight wad or not)

It really shouldn't be that hard to pass smog with a mildly modified car. I've talked to a couple different shops up here in Sacramento County, and the good news is that nobody knows of any shops with 4 wheel dyno's... Every place I talked to said they CAN test subaru's there, and the procedure is to test it in neutral at 2500rpm. no load, no boost...

Isn't it four years?

I thought it was four years.
From the DMV site:
"Vehicles that are four model years old, or less, are exempt from the biennial smog inspection for registration renewal. These vehicle owners will pay an annual $4 fee for the first four registration years."

Yes. It's four years and not four years from when you bought it, but buy production year model. So if you bought a 2002 in 2003 you'll have to smog it in 3 years. As far as under the hood, if it doesn't look too bad under there, most shops won't notice. Never do a smog test if they are going to make you wait. Make sure your engine is warmed up. And yes, our cars are exempt from the dyno test. You can thank the big gas guzzling polluting suv's for that one.

then your car is deemed "pollutor" or worse yet "fross pollutor" and you can't get certified until you fix whatever the problem is and get it re-tested. Basically it costs you a bunch of money

So if my car is a 2000 then will it still be in 2006 when I need to get the car smogged?

2000 + 4 != 2006.

you only need one cat to function to pass the sniffer. just make sure it is down stream of the turbo.

Don't worry about the visual, just make sure you pay the guy.
