No more smog exempt??

Cali may cancel smog exemption from pre-1976 cars
source: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/31/c...pre-1976-cars/
In California, home of the strictest car emissions regulations in the U.S., cars produced before 1976 do not need to undergo smog testing. California State Senator Dean Florez has proposed legislation that would remove that exemption for cars registered in the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District.

i hear air is really bad over there...but i wonder, just because, would it spread to other areas too? no more 65 el camino's on the streets of east bay? (my co-worker has two)

they would need to supply catalytic converters for all the cars as well as set up some standard for smog control systems for cars that didn't come with one. Otherwise they can't really make a retroactive law like that (I don't think)

Its proposed legislation, that is a very, very, very long way from becoming a law.

Repealing an exemption is different from instituting an entirely new law. That doesn't mean it won't happen, only that it will take a lot longer to get through the process.

I doubt this will go through...most of the people who have 'classic cars' tend to be from income brackets that have an effect on legislation. Just my .02

I hope this passes. Any car thats shoving outhundreds of times more pollutants than my car and doesn't have to have a cat is ridiculous.

Just curious, have you ever taken a political science class?

I didnt say it wouldnt happen, just that it would take a long time. By the time that hits the governors desk, we might have a new governor. He still needs other state legislators to sponsor his bill, it will probably be re-written several times and then it has to go to vote and then to the governors desk.

And all of that will probably cost us millions that could be used on a real issue besides the limited amm of cars from 1976 and before that are on the road on a daily basis........

but hey **** it lets loose as much as possible and keep it up!!!!!!

+10 for notices informing us of our stimulus package..........great way to **** on our economy even more!!!!
