nice car ... 800hp 1966 Cobra owned by Shelby

http://www.gizmag.com/go/6423/

I did the math.. the cobra with the superchargers weighs just south of 2400 lbs... that's a power to weight ratio of 1:3... better than some sportbikes out there....

DAYAM.

Actually a lot of modified cars have power to weights better than bikes. I'd venture a GT30R STI w/ weight redcution and an empty tank on 100 octane is equal to a past generation 600cc sportbike. (....basically rode in a car w/ the preceding properties and watch the speedo sweep about as fast as my bike, lol)

Thing is sportbikes bikes are quoted as dry weights of high 300's - mid 400 lbs range. Have to add a good 20 pounds for gas and the 150-200 lbs geared up (helmet and suit and boots) rider and that multiple for power to weight drops substantially (but still flaming fast)

Another thing is for magazine tests, people who testride bikes are always expert riders. I mean you have to be really good at riding or you'll kill youself. Those same people do the acceleration tests. and bang out those 3 second 0-60 times and 9, 10 second quarter miles. The people who do the drag strip testing for modified and stock cars for car mags often can't drag race worth jack.

Basically I'm just saying most bikes aren't THAT fast - people seem to think all sportbikes automatically are lightyears ahead of cars.

While the above statements are probably true about bikes, the STi with the GT30R's reliability is greatly sacrificed from being "maxed out," while the sport bike will run just as quick of times, stock.

I'd put a +1 on the sport bike.

Well, seeing as I ride a sportbike (2004 cbr600rr), which, when I'm on it with full kit and full tank, weighs about 600 lbs, and has a power to weight of about 1:5.5 to 1:6, I have some basis for comparison , and really, that was all it was, a comparison. Besides, all vehicles power to weight ratios are calculated with no rider. It's just that the weight of a rider on a bike skews the ratio more than in a car. To compare, my bike with no rider and full tank has a power to weight of about 1:4. And to further equalize the comparison, the cobra with me in it still ratios in at 1:3.25. No matter how you look at it, that car is impressive.

Modern sportbikes have the best power to weight, no question. It takes a serious supercar or a seriously modified modern car to get to sportbike accelleration territory. A sportbike will out-accellerate most things on the road until they hit their aerodynamic max, whether from a start or from a roll. It's a lot easier to launch a bike as well. Where you run into issues is traction on turns, as the traction dynamics of a motorcycle means that you lose contact patch the more you are leaned over, and thus are limited to the speeds you can take turns at. There is a good Top Gear episode that shows a Gallardo on a track against an MV Agusta F1000 Tamburino (not the fastest bike, but one of the most expensive), and it barely beat it on the track. I don't want to go more into which is better, bike or car, because that would require a much longer post. Suffice to say that I DO know what I am comparing.

Despite all that, this car still ROCKS. Plus, it's road legal, owned by the man, Carroll Shelby, himself, and while a classic car at 1966, still outperforms almost anything out there, and does it with 60s tech (no fancy electronics, no ECU, ABS, TR, etc). THAT is why I thought this car deserved mention in a post on i-club .

I agree, I think some collector will swoop in and take this thing for several million, at least. I expect Jay Leno to buy it, knowing how much of a gearhead he is.... as seen by THIS biodiesel turbine engine car he had GM make for him:

SEXY!

yep, he's 83 and on his second heart, (had a transplant, about 10 years ago I think) but still kicking

Actually the transplant was in 1990, so 16 years on somebody else's ticker....pretty amazing!

god I love those cars.....my plan when I'm older and have the money is to buy one of the kits either for that or the type 65 coupe from factory five. the only problem is that I'd have to buy a mustang...which I vowed I would never do
