Newb Setting Up WEP For Home Network

Since a lot of you may be running the same Linksys router or work in the network industry, maybe you guys can help me.

So I have only had hi-speed internet access for 1 week, and I have already bought a Linksys wireless router so I can run wireless from my laptop around the house and have my PC attached to the router via a ethernet cable.

When I set up the router last night, in the end of the setup I gave it a password. Then I began surfing the net. I looked at all available wireless connections and it seems that quite a few people in my condo complex are using wireless routers as well. And since my router was unprotected, I wanted to make it secure.

I talked to my dad who is a computer technicican for EMC, and asked him how to setup a secure wireless network so noone else besides myself could use my router. He told my to change to WEP and set a password.

I got into the Linksys router and gave it a PASSPHRASE and it gave me a KEY. I wrote down that key and the network became secure. But when I tried to log back into my router by using 192.***.*.* it asked for a login name and password. I tried giving it the Linksys name as the login name and my password that I made when I setup the modem originally. It won't let me back into the router. I also tried giving it Linksys as the login name and the KEY I wrote down and that didn't work either.

How do I get back into my router?

I tried resetting the router by pressing the reset button on the back for 10 seconds. Restarted the computer. Typed in 192.***.*.* and my original login in name as Linksys and the password I originally made during startup won't help me get in.

How do I get back into my router? Please help me!!!!

hmm... for Linksys routers, the login name should be blank and the default password should be "admin" (without the "s). If you changed the password, try leave the login blank and use your new password...

What model linksys router?

I believe that if you reset the router using the button on the back, it will reset the router to its default settings, meaning your router login should now be the original, default user/pass combination.

do a hard reset. hold the reset button down for 30 seconds, no less, then let go of it while simultaneously pulling the power. that should hard reset your router, and everything should be default again.

Try these two things:

First try logging in with "admin" in the password field only. If that doesn't work, again leave the user name blank and enter your password in the password field.

That should work.. .if not call tech assistance.
I will often change the IP address too in the setup, so you don't accidentally configure one of your neighbors' routers! ahahahah... (or vice-versa)

You should also change your SSID.

If you have any problems with WEP as I did occasionally, you might also try Mac authentication.... it only lets specific devices access the network.... of course people can still sniff your packets.... sniff sniff

Usually the default is just "admin" like wm07 said, without a password though. So just type in Admin, then enter. hope this helps.

as above... in point of fact, i never noticed a spot to add a user name for that login, so in the future i wouldn't worry about it...

but for security:

change your ssid
ssid broadcast should be left on (i will pita for YOU if you turn it off, and doesn't really do much for safety)
change the router password to other than admin (now that you've reset it ^^)
Consider using MAC address filtering
Consider using WPA-PSK (TKIP) instead of WEP

the only thing most people have that is worth getting is pr0n.

dood, just setup WEP, and you'll be fine. the chances of some kid in your hood cracking your wep key is low.

If you are truely paranoid, buy a cisco wifi AP, or build one using OpenBSD and use PFAuth.
That way it will not matter if they can crack your wep key, if they do not have an SSH client and a username, and password to the OpenBSD box, they can't get a single packet in to the network.

only way to be moderatly secure with a wireless network is to use layer2 encryption tunnels that are created on a peer bassis...

that of course tied into a strong auth back end of some sort..

fortresstech.com is a good example.. that still leaves you wide open to layer1 attacks (sig jamming etc)

true, but i believe that WPA is more difficult to hack than wep is it not?

As for SSID broadcast, i'd heard that you should turn it off... when i tried that on a friends network, none of their wireless could connect anymore =P win xp doesn't like it much...

for ref:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/11468

for OP:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/wifisecurity
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/wlan

And yes I know, MAC can be cloned/spoofed, blah blah blah... much like CD copy prot, as long as you can access the music in SOME way, there will always be a way around that protection. It's a question of how difficult you choose to make it... or, how many of the super easy ways you choose to eliminate.

Not saying my suggestions were iron-clad =P They were suggested as things to look into as perhaps better than what he had before.

I suppose if your goal is just to make sure no one uses your router, the best thing to do would be to disable wireless and just run a cable from your computer to it...
