Newark Memorial Hostage Situation
What a Crazy lunch. I left for lunch and was on my way over to meet my friend. He lives in the condos behind Newark Memorial High School. As I'm driving down Cherry Street I see 2 cop cars sitting on the side of the road with lights flashing (behind the Newark Memorial High School football fields).
I turn right and head down Joaquin Murieta Ave. As I'm driving down the street I see a motorcycle cop coming the opposite direction. He turns in to the parking lot, turns around and comes back down the street behind me. I get to the stop light at the end of Joaquin Murieta and Cedar Blvd. The motorcycle cop is in the right lane and I'm in the left lane (to do a U-Turn to head back in to my friend's complex). The light turns green and the cop proceeds to turn left in front of me (which he is not supposed to do as that is not a Left Turn Lane) and I do a U-Turn and then pull in to my friends complex.
As I drive through the complex I see 2 cops walking with guns drawn obviously looking for something. I pull in to a Visitor parking spot and get out of my car and walk up the stairs to my friends condo. I knock on his door. He comes out and we head back down to go to my car.
On the way to my car I see in the next parking lot the same cops walking back towards the lot again (towards us). I am on the driver's side of my car at this point. My friend has stopped looking at the other parking lot. (The cops were walking from a parking lot to the left of my car, the guys my friend saw were coming from a lot in front and to the right of my car. Directly in front of my car was another condo so the 2 groups didn't see each other).
These 3 kids come running through the parking lot and then the cops spot the kids and start running after them yelling "Freeze! Get Down on the Ground!". The kids all ran straight ahead and the cops finally grabbed them about 10 yards behind my car. My friend and I watched in amazement for a minute and were going to watch the kids get arrested. This is until a gun was fired and we saw smoke rising. At that point I was all "We're Leaving!". We get in the car and proceed to leave as another cop vehicle pulls up in the parking lot where the cops just came from and runs up to give backup to the original 2 cops.
We leave the complex and then turn left on Cedar Blvd. We see a detour and have to head to the right (away from the school) and eventually end up at NewPark Mall in the parking lot where we see tons of people walking away from the school. We pull in the lot and my friend jumps out to find out what happened. From the story he got, one of the kids pulled a gun in his girlfriend's class and started a hostage situation. They eventually fled the scene and tried to escape. They ended up being captured and arrested shortly afterwards (right in front of my friend and I).

My friend just got back home last night after being down in L.A. (where he is from) and was sitting there saying "Damn, I may need to move back to L.A. It's too dangerous to live in Newark".
This group of 3 kids he has seen in his complex before as they set off his Fire Alarm for the complex and were hiding in the dumpster area (it's an enclosed area) and he saw them there laughing. So looks like these kids have a history of being trouble makers.

It looked like the gun was fired down and away from the suspects and officers, so it looks like the suspects fired the gun (or it was discharged from a suspect level).
It also didn't sound like a loud "BANG!". It sounded more like a "POP!" which to me sounded like a smaller caliber pistol (maybe a 9mm).

Yeah, no need to worry. I'd bet your girl was probably away from her place around this time today and those particular suspects have already been apprehended. From the news articles it does sound like there may have been a few others possibly involved in this, but with how many cops & SWAT were around the area it may very well be completely over by now.
