New front driver cv axle shaft assembly..

I was getting an oil change today and the shop notified me that it was leaking grease and that it needed to be replaced. They quoted me at like 260$... Any idea why this would go out so soon? I am at about 17,000 miles right now and I don't see why this would happen. I am hoping to take it up with Subaru for a warranty claim but I am not sure how well that is going to go. Can I just get it done at a shop like GST for cheaper? I plan on looking at it myself to double check first of all.. :/ Thanks.

I think for warranty work you have to go to a dealer, but I could be wrong.

What suspension are you on? Lowering it too much can put a lot of stress on the axles. Also, have you launched it at all? $260 seems a little high, you can get a new axle and do the install yourself (if your mechanically inclined) for $99 I believe.

I'm on coilovers, but I'm not THAT low. I asked them if coilovers would be the culprate and they said no...but then again I don't always trust those guys :P. I don't launch, and I'm a relatively good driver to my car. So if in theory my lowering was causing the problem, what can I do to stop it from happening in the future? Anything?

I just bought some axels from these guys. They were quick to ship, $55 a piece with core exchange. They are completely rebuilt axles assembled in Ocala. Check around on the other forums, many have had good experiences with them. That's why I decided to try them. So far so good.

Because I was broke at the time and had other repairs that needed to be done. I've had this axle on for about 30k miles now with plenty of track days and autocrosses on it. It's holdin up fine with no signs of wear even on my zeal funciton v6's with 10/8's.

You probably just ran over something that ripped the CV boot. Once the boot is ripped, its done. Rocks and grit get inside the grease and your CV is toast.

Completely normal

My cv boot went because of heat. Somehow it got so hot at the boot that it melted. How, I do not know.

You're just hot . Well I suppose I'll have to just bite the bullet. I would imagine that this would be considered a wear item by subaru?

Just replace the rubber boot and grease, no need to replace the axle.

If its not making noises, chances are the axle is in perfect condition and does not need to be replaced. Take out the axle and inspect it. Ive dealt with ripped boots on each of my subarus (as well as my friend). It is an easy cheap fix if you have tools and time.

If it clicks when you drive (think baseball card in bike spoke) then its broke.

You can find step by step instructions on nasioc to remove the axle.

Try the dealer first, I got it covered under the powertrain warranty on my WRX.
