New Car Sales Tax?

I am wondering whether the car sales tax are calculated where you register the car, or where you buy the car? I live in the Alameda county and am wondering whether I should just skip all the East Bay dealerships to save 0.5% on tax. Thanks.

It doesn't matter where you buy... it's where you register.

True.... I sell in placer co. (7.25) and I get people from everywhere trying to save money by buying a car here. If only it worked that way.

yeah if it went by where you buy you'd have a crap load of dealerships on in one place and people driving for hours to get there.

So is it ok if I register with my brother's address in SF to save 0.5%? I pay for his room's rent so that he's closer to college. Does DMV care as long as I can receive the regs etc?
