The New Albums thread...
I was just listening to a new cd I picked up last night and really enjoying it. Made me realize that I've bought some really good records lately and some really bad ones. That got me thinking that it would be cool to have a thread where guys that bought cd's reviewed them and told us what to go for and what to avoid....
So.....here are a few of my recent ones.
(rock) Definately pick up the new Dredg album. It's green. They are local san jose boys and they are an amazing band. If you've never seen them live...do it. This record is amazing. It's very mellow. Great guitar tones. Voice is amazing. This is one of the best records I've heard in a long time. One of the best bands around right now. If you like stuff like tool or coldplay you'll like this. 10/10
(rock) Definately pick up the new Alkaline trio. Crimson. Another very solid one. the guys took some time off and worked on other projects. you can definately hear the influence of guys like kevin seconds (7 seconds). Lots of aggressive punk type drumming. Great guitar work. Solid song writing. They just keep getting better. 10/10
(rap) Ying Yang Twins. It's ok. Got some good beats. hit some notes so low my jl10w7 couldn't get down to them. Definately some tunes you can get into. Some let downs. Some wasted space. Pretty typical with most rap acts you here on the radio these days. I don't listen to the radio much so there were a couple songs worth having. decent. I'd say that I wouldn't buy it again. It's likely that I'll sell it in a few months. I'd sell it for $10 bucks right now if anyone is into that kind of things. I'd say download the radio songs....oh...and this is an insanely dirty record. haaaa. Nasty. 6/10. Deduction for crappy song writing. but it's got some real bang your head nasty beats...so that levels out.
(hip hop) Common. Be. Another one that kind of let me down. Common is an amazing lyricist. guy is insanely talented an actually has some intelligent things to say. that alone makes this a probably keeper for me. it's better than the last record he put out but no where near the quality of the first one. It's pretty boring actually. not something that you toss in your car. More of a sit at home record. Background party music. Stuff like that. 7/10 (bonus for lyric quality..otherwise...maybe a 6)
(rock) the Vacation. band from WW Zero. 70's rock. But not exactly the trendy radio stuff. More pissed off and genuine. Good solid rock record. Got a couple really good songs on it. If you're into the killers, zutons, stuff like that. Current wave of rock you'll probably like this record. I'd say it's a 6.5/10
(pop) Bravery. I'm sure you've heard the radio song..think its called "An Honest Mistake" These guys are on that 80's pop revival deal. Solid pop record. It doesn't come off as something manufactured. It really seems like the music that would come from some guys that grew up listening to the cure, depeche mode and the likes of that. I liked it a lot more than I thought 8.5/10
(indy) Gratitude. These guys are from SF and the singer is a legend in the indy scene. He's a damn genious. if you are into this kind of music you will love this record. Song writing is top notch. The record is well produce. It's a good listen. 9/10
(pop/rock/blues) Jack Johnson. In Between Dreams. Well...it's jack johson. If you are not aware of who he is...skip to the next review. It's jack johnson and it's some of his good stuff. I really enjoy this record. For fans of ben harper and just good guitar tunes. Solid kick back record. 8/10
(hardcore) Throwdown. If you like hardcore. If you like pissed off *** whooping music with good breakdowns....you'll like this record. I've only gotten like 5 songs deep on it so far so I can't give a real breakdown on it. But I'll say this....it's one of the better hardcore/metal records I've picked up recently as there as been a lot of garbage coming out lately. So far....8/10. I would have produced it a bit differently.
There are a bunch over the last couple months....but these are off the top of my head and picked up pretty recently.
Oh...and keep your eyes pealed. I have a couple buddies bands about to release records and I they will be good. Punk_the Lonely Kings. Rock_Fighting Jacks. Both great bands.
The jacks just released two songs on purevolume..check them out.
so...anyone else...please tell me what to get and what to avoid.
I picked up some terrible records recently. I'll do some thinking and see what I come up with....
this thread really should be in OT but I figured it would be of more use here since I think I've been in OT like 3 times.

AGree on the alkaline trio cd...really good...matt's voice sounds better and better...to think his band used to open for mine when i lived in chicago! crazy.....they are fantastic and deserve everything they worked for.
Gratitude...good old Jonah...I was gonna try out for bass in his prior band, new end original....gratitude is excellent, but I think New end original was better....well...because I love Norm's guitar playing back to the Texas is the reason days...
anyways, two great picks!

I really have enjoyed all of Jonah's previous offerings. One Line Drawing was unbelievable. Especially live because he was constantly playing with different people and it was always a new experience. New End...great. And Far is one of my all time favorite bands. Gratitude is just....more commercially acceptable. But still very very valid.
seriously...pick up the dredg record. I've listened to it twice today.

I like Be a lot. Although I think only having 11 tracks makes me feel empty. I understand the "record lotsa tracks and pick the best ones". But only 45 minutes of music... Maybe that's why I think it's easy to listen to. Be is certainly better than Electric Circus.

Bloc Party is pretty darn good for being so goddang hip that it's insane...but the CD is well worth the $10 or so...many really good songs on that disc which is their saving grace for being hyped up as much as they are.

electric circus was a joke. It's been sitting in my sell pile for a while. If anyone wants it I'll give it to you for $5. Shoot. buy me a beer and call it even.
I really like "like water for chocolate" and "one day it'll all make sense"...that's actually my favorite probably.
Can I borrow a dollar...for it's time was insane. I didn't think anyone else would remember that. Came out in what...92'..haaa.

FOO FIGHTERS ain't all that great
I bought is and i was excited about the 2 disc set.. but I heard it and they do nothing but scream in the first one and the second cd is like depressing.
it reminds me of the smashing pumpkins cd.. with night and day covers. but they were sooooo much better.
OFFSPRING GREATEST HITS:
It's a great CD if you're a first time OFFSPRING listener. it's got a good all around selection. but there were better I would have picked for it. oh well.
WEEZER: MAKE BELIEVE
Probably not their best... not like their first 2,... but this one has a few songs that get stuck in your head (like most of the weezer albums). Nice pictures in the sleeve... but other than that, I'd give it a 6 out of the 10 I would have given them for the first album. Good job though!

For great drummers John Theodore of Mars Volta is just sick. Saw them at Greek theatre and they just rocked. There newest album Frances the Mute is a great CD to just listen through the whole thing.
Another great album I recently got is the new White Stripes. Very eclectic, front 70's power rock to bluegrass. Great music to get drunk and play along with your air guitar.

lately i've really been feeling the new BEP album 'monkey business'. a lot of people say that its strayed from their underground roots, but i like the beats and the tunes. i think its a great hip hop album perfect for just cruisin on a hot day with the windows down. hope its not a taboo recommendation thats gonna get me flamed. =P

Lyrics Born - Same !@#$ Different Day
Great album as far remix albums go. The Callin' Out Remix featuring Casual and E-40 alone already makes it worth it <-- this song make you feel so... bay area. Pack up Remix has a dope beat. If you like Later That Day get this too.
