Need to ship my old wheels to my new home... how to pack?
Need to ship my old wheels to my new home... how to pack?
I'm moving soon and have ZERO room for my OEM wheels (with tires mounted). Because of this, I've decided to ship them. My question(s) for you i-clubbers:
1. What's cheapest way to ship (UPS Ground, USPS, etc.)
(I don't really care how long it takes, within reason, since they'll be my winter wheels/tires)
2. How the heck do I safely package them so they don't get scratched/bent in transit?
Maybe Subydude or some vendors could help me with ideas, since you have vast experience with this.
EDIT: also, any guesses at how much it will cost? I know from browsing various online tire sites that it costs $30-40 to ship tires...

most places will charge you an extra handling fee for large packages like that. tirerack and other vendors ship thier wheels individually. they use cardboard cut in circles to cover both sides of the wheel, then use tape or plastic straps to hold the cardboard to the wheel.
in my shipping experiences, fedex ground is usually cheapest

I'm guessing this is as cheap as it gets.
Assumptions: (4) packages, 50lbs each, 24" diameter, 12" high.
$160!

have you thought about getting a hitch installed and then renting a trailer.
you can haul a few things on there.
heck with just a hitch, you can buy one of those things that HANG from the hitch. can carry as much as the trailer tongue weight limit is...

I'll miss the great weather but I think the quality of life is better up there.
Where are you at?
Well, I think I'm going to impossibly find a way to make them fit *inside* of my car. It ain't worth it to ship old RE92's on OEM wheels for $160+. I was initially thinking it would be under $50.
The tow hitch thing is a great idea, but that'll cost at least $100.
Thanks for all the great ideas guys!

Try...
Craigslist.
Yeah, seriously. There are people who advertise that they need something taken from point A to point B, and if anyone is going that direction (including rides, etc.), give them something toward gas money.
Time it so you're both travelling together so you can cruise up a bit faster...
