Need new battery for WRX

Carlsen wants $114 for a battery. Sears Die Hard Gold is about $80.
Does anyone know how much Walmart/Costco charge for a similar
battery? Any coupons, specials this week somewhere? Thanks.

You probably won't find too much of a discount anywhere. 60-80 is about the standard price for a battery. Good luck.

yeah, what he said ^^^^^. I tried scrounging for battery deals last year. It was a waste of time. Just bite the bullet and get the Die-hard. It's a decent battery and can't beat the warranty. I was going to get one but didn't feel like driving all the way to Sears, so I ended up getting an Interstate from a place in the City.

Interesting comment, some people I've talked with, including mechanics say that
interstate batteries are better quality than Die Hards. I believe interstate used to
OEM for Sears, but Sears went with a cheaper manufacturer.

actually, besides being too lazy to drive out to Sears, the those were other reasons ^^^^^I went with an Interstate. A couple of mechanic buddies told me Interstate makes better batteries, and the quality of Die Hards has fallen off recently too.

FWIW, I've heard AC/Delcos are pretty good too.

edit: I believe costco has them for a decent price too..... ~120 or so....I think.

IMO, unless you're like LL and have a BOOMIN system in your ride or frequently run for the border and have to leave your car dormant for extended periods, Optimas are a waste of $$$. They're heavy as heck too.

I've had Interstates & Die Hards in all of my previous cars and have been very happy with both.

Wow, timely advice! My WRX's battery finally took a dump this morning so I'm in the hunt for a new battery as well. I believe Sears has the Optima red tops for $129 or something like that.

i've used the red optimas (since 92 for my truck) and find them to be the best yet least obtrusive accessory.

just waiting for the batt in my STi to die...

Group size 35. I hear Sears has it, or you can order it here: www.remybattery.com

Optimas are great if you're going to do a lot of offroading and maybe rolling the car and you don't want to have battery acid spashing around. They're also great if you don't use the car for awhile, because they discharge at a slower rate.

For a regular daily driver though, they're pretty overkill. They're half again the price of a good Interstate, and Interstate's are pretty good batteries. I like them
better than DieHards.

Costco. You can get optimas for like $100 at Costco.

dont know if they changed the design...

but a few years ago, people were reporting that the side mounted terminals where burning up when used with a high current connection like an electrical winch where loads can go up to 350-400 amps.

so i talked to the then president of optima (before they really made it big and was bought up by johnson controls) in their booth during CES in the mid to late 90s and he confirmed that the connection between the side mounted terminals to the top ones were a thin/small strip of lead.

which when high current is passed through it, can burn out.

since then only thing connected to that side mount is the primary connection for the stereo system. the whole thing draws less than 50 amps.

the winch, the starter and everything else was made to the top terminal...

YMMV...
