Yep, read that too - Paying a fee to simply use a debit card... INSANE!! I encourage everyone to close their account rather than pay a fee like that. Don't suck it up and say 'oh well', just bank elsewhere.

Credit Union all the way.

Chase - spam mail constantly offering us money to open an account - however, once you read the fine print, they're simply giving you fee-free checking for six months, then you start paying 10-15/mo. to keep your money there.

Wells Fargo - absolute worst bank I've ever dealt with. I wouldn't send my worst enemy there.

Bank of America - liars, cheaters, thieves who will take all your money - and as a side note, they are now the bank the EDD uses to pay out unemployment benefits. Crooked as it gets there - tied with Wells Fargo for worst banking institution ever.

My checking and savings accounts are with a local credit union. No monthly fees, access via bank, ATM and online, AND there's an app for that on my iPhone, so I can do my banking from wherever I get cell service (sh**ty AT&T service).

In addition, credit unions are FAR more secure than banks. Their lending policies tend to be more conservative, and the ones around here never got involved with the lie/cheat/steal mortgage scandals that brought the other banks to beg for bailouts. When the crash happens, and it WILL happen, the local credit unions are going to be the ones that survive while the large banks are going to fail. Look at BofA - search for some of the news surrounding them...

I think I'm sold on going with a CU, mostly from R-Dub belittling me for still being with a bank

Just need to find one I like without fees.

Wells Fargo has been constant small issues. The most recent was that a month ago I went in to deposit some money and asked if my mom (who uses a bank in Monterey still, but lives/works up here) could sign a check over to me so I could deposit it. They said "Sure, she just needs to be here with ID." Went in today because a client was late paying her and she needed the money ASAP. Today the clerk goes "No, we can't do that. I can try for you but it is a 100% failure rate." I went "Ok, well last time I was told I could, I'm tired of misinformation and lies, so I'd like to close the whole account." She goes and gets the manager who goes "Oh, I can make an exception for you." I asked why the clerk then told me it was a 100% failure rate and he couldn't figure which load of **** he wanted to tell me.

They are also **** with approving people (me, and family members, all with decent credit) for loans. Oh, sure, they'll gladly hold my money and give it out to others, but me? Nah!

^ Also a Bank of the West customer here. I've had a savings and checking account with them for longer than I can remember, never had any issues at all. If you want hassle free with no bs, give BofW a try. To this day I still have no urge to switch to another bank.

keypoint cu. part of the co-op so finding an atm is easy. and if you have the unlimited checking account, they will reverse any atm fee you have. (basically, free atm at ANY atm regardless of the bank/cu) and if you want, if you put me as a reference, we both get a 25 target gift card!

Not that I like chase much anymore but I have 0 issues finding ATMs many out there and inside stores too. Our account also credits us the fee for using someone else's ATM.

I so agree with you! We loved WaMu..

I'm thinking about going to a CU, because some still actually have "free" checking...
