Need major engine work :(

Hi All,

I haven't been hanging with BAIC peeps in a while so I'm not plugged in on good local shops to get work done.

Looks like I'm going to need some major engine repair/replacement in a stock 2008 STi . I checked out the Vendor forums but that seems to be a ghost town.

Unfortunately with two kids now I don't have the time to work on it myself, and since it's my daily driver I need it done quickly. Who can I trust with my baby to do some engine/turbo repair that is close to San Jose these days?

Thanks!

Kind of depends on where exactly you are in BAIC. Quite a few shops, but different recs for different areas. I'll go with the default Mert @ RBMS in Hayward for a motor rebuild. Sorry to hear it man. SJ is kinda big and not as many shop in the south bay.

I will second this, RBMS. Mert charges a good price for fantastic service, its kind of my defacto hangout now, I am there 1-2 days a week for a few hours. I learn a lot just watching him work, and talking to him.

Give him a call, or email, he responds fast.

sorry to hear man. Make sure you get a proper tune on the thing. I look at it as the turbo system as a whole everything it takes is pretty complex but for some reason subaru doesn't bother tuning them safely. I think a lot of issues in the sti are from the stock tunes.

Others that I've used in the south bay: Mann Engineering is in Santa Clara and Garage One is in south SJ and Mt View.

I'm in South San Jose, so Hayward would be a ways out and a long way to tow... that would be a stretch.

Goals are just reliability as I'm happy with stock power... but if there is power to be had for the same price I might consider minor upgrades but that's a dangerous game to start playing.

If you want quick and quality... take it to Mert.

But if you're looking to stay close to home I'd probably take it to Mann.

Mert at RBMS or LIC. Those two places I've never heard a bad thing about.

Also, locally, Garage1 is on Almaden Expressway just a few blocks off of Alma.

he also said he wanted reliability. I would take it to LIC. I live in Saratoga and I drive to LIC for all my work. I haven't been to a more stand up shop.

I don't disagree. I personally think they're amazing.

Just pointing out... if hayward which is 20 minutes away is too far then LIC which is well over an hour away is more than likely too far.

Otherwise LIC would be at the top or near the top of my list of recommended shops for this sort of maintenance.
