I think the guy's trying to avoid a long distance relationship and apparently he'd do anything to keep her close to him. So moving back to her homeland isn't an option he's looking for, optimistically for her career or not. :P

All I can say is, it's a real bear these days to go from F1 (student visa) to H1B (work visa) status. I know because I've been through it. The biggest obstacle is usually the prevailing wage that needs to be met by the prospective employer. Google it and see for yourself, it's part of the labor certification needed from the EDD in order to start the petition with the INS; the prevailing wage is set impossibly high in most fields in order to give U.S. citizens an advantage when applying for the same position. My recommendation is for her to consult a good immigration attorney because chances are, she will need some help tweaking her job description to meet the requirements once she finds an employer willing to sponsor her. I don't think I could've done it without my attorney, she was a HUGE help.

Oh ya, and don't run out and marry her right away if things happen to fall through. Keep in mind that you'll be financially responsible for her for a full 10 years if you marry her, even if you end up getting divorced.

if you want her around that bad .... marriage.

If you arent willing to marry her then let her go. Stop wasting your time and her time, she would be able to make a mint in china with a degree from here.. your being a selfish little beoch.. you want her around but you dont want to sack up and do the right thing to keep her around..

Well, things aren't quite that easy, and he probably shouldn't let himself be pressured by her immigration status when it comes down to making a life-changing decision such as whether to marry her or not. He needs to be sure that she's really "the one" before making such a decision, and that he's not marrying her for the wrong reasons. When my husband and I decided to get married, I was on an H1B visa (which is temporary), and I have to admit that my immigration status influenced that decision at least to a certain degree. I have regretted that to this day, and guess what, after less than two years we are now in the process of divorce. Sucks for me (back to H1B, oh well, at least I still have my job), but it sucks even more for my soon-to-be ex, because if I felt like it, I could just max out my credit cards (all $40K worth of them) and leave the country. Guess who would be picking up the tab, even after the divorce is final? That's right, my green card "sponsor", aka ex-hubby. But I'm not that evil...

I've got a friend in this boat - he really is a brilliant engineer, but nobody is hiring so he just keeps going to school and never graduates.

H1-B quota for the 2004/2005 year has already run out. Earliest to start is Oct 05 and earliest application date is Apr-Jun 05 I think. I'm not sure any company will agree to hire a person and wait until Oct 05 to start, for someone with just a marketing degree and with the current economy.

Thanks guys for all the comments. All I can say is, not that I don't want to marry her, but I'm in financial problem myself. We both know that it couldn't happen at the moment. We will keep looking for a job. Thanks so much guys.

Nope... you are only responsible after you've been maried for 10 years.

It's all about the dowry.
