mid to late 90s Corrolla? Should be cheap to find, maintain and idiotically reliable.

Thanks for all the responses guys, but like I said it needs to be under $1k we're all stretched as it is. Hide I did find a couple crx's for cheap so I'll look into that, thanks! And fxtbrah I'll look into tow yard auctions but have no clue how to get into them..

Yeah i would also check out pick and pull and places like that. Last time i was there, about a month ago, there were a few cars they had for sale for just over 1k and they looked worth the money. not too beat up, right down your alley.

Since I'm a nice guy. Here is a list of the auctions that I made when I was going to them. I believe #4 is the biggest one around here. These auctions don't require a resale permit. I would pick up a Toyota/Honda beater for $500-$600 and plan to dump $250 into getting it smog ready. There's also gate fees added on top of the auction price. The rest is all about luck. Honestly with an under 1k limit, its kinda hard to find a dependable daily driver.

craigslist takes time but def a good place to find something. i just picked up a nice 96 impreza wagon for 1,400 2 weeks ago.. just need to spend the time looking. after my dd miata went into a pole, i was in scrambles trying to find something. my only tip would be to find something the runs and fix things as they break. buying something cheap because it has a "little problem" often turns into many "big problems"

Under $1k pretty much guarantees it will have problems that need to be dealt with, so depends on how hard you want to look.

Thank you all for your help, we're going to start going through all your links and info posted soon.

I know it's a stretch to find what we need for that price but we still have to try. Thanks!

1,000 dollar cars are temporary solutions so if you are looking for something to drive everyday for years for 1,000 bucks, heh good luck. I'd try to go with any civic possible.
