THank you for pointing it out. I wanted to change it, however, I don't have access to those files anymore since it was a class project back in 2000..

A little critique to offer...

Your cover letter looks ok... not outstanding, nor does it stand out that much from other canidates...

ditch that...
Should read "To whom it may concern" unless you have a specific name, then use it

This section is good, but need work. It's too personal, too casual for an important topic, like why the hell should they hire you?

Don't use phrases like "I believe" that implies doubt on your part. You have to show your confidence.

Be brief.... This should read

"Here are my qualifications:"
Or
"Summary of my skills:"

* Assisted in building a new small network with Windows 2000 server that connected to four other Bay Area offices with PIX firewall.

Be more specific here. Sounds like you did alot of remote management of your clients, that true? if so, what tools did you use to achieve the task?

* Supported and administrated over 80 users in Window and Exchange 2000 network environment from group policy, to security, and mailbox limit.

Again, be more specific here. So was this using Windows 2000 or windows NT? big differnce as you should know already. You need to mention those industy buzz words to capture their attention!

* Proficiency in setting up, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining numerous peripherals and networks that includes printers, print servers, switches, firewalls, routers, VPN, DSL modems)

proficient is such a nasty word on a resume or cover letter. If you have any experiance then your an expert..... right? Your the best, that's why they should hire you over someone else.

* Configure and maintain a backup system with Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 and HP robotic auto loader to backup the Exchange email server, file server and server system state.
* Exceptional communicative abilities with the demonstrated capacity to train and mentor end users on various systems and business applications;
* Documentation of comprehensive network configurations from routers, servers, firewalls to end user support call through Track It 6.0.

Need more detail. Were you assigned the task to document the network topology? Or was it something you initiated or expanded on?

* Comprehensive training and expertise in help desk support environment providing various levels of technical support to end users;
* Extensive experience in working alongside with end users and customers through years of experience in various industries in understanding their needs and assisting them with their questions or problems;

That is all good, but isn't this also a basic requirement for the job you want?

* Technical proficiency in numerous platforms, network protocols and administration tools;

Name the protocols your familar with. remember, Buzz words capture the attention of the corporate recuiter ( 'cuz their not technical and don't know what the hell their looking at )

* Exceptional communicative abilities with the demonstrated capacity to train and mentor end users on various systems and business application;
* Experience and strong interest in web development and design utilizing knowledge of numerous languages and software;

what languages, what tools..... etc...

* Highly goal-oriented, detail-oriented and result-oriented to ensure deliverance of a desired and effective outcome;

If you kick *** on the earlier bullet items get rid of this crap... They know your motivated, you want the job right?

* Proficiency in setting up, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining numerous peripherals and networks.

no no no...
Your the best damm expert right?!?!?

rewrite this and use this bullet item in your introductory paragraph, or in the summary below.

In addition, I offer outstanding organizations skills, which have proven to be a critical asset in ensuring that network protocols and peripherals operate effectively and efficiently. These qualities, combined with my dedication, tireless work ethic, and enthusiasm to learn would have a positive impact to the operation in a company.

That was a decent paragraph, but get rid of "In addition". You need to be more "forceful" or consice in what your attempting to present in the cover letter.

Never, never ask a potential employer where to direct your job search!

If I was hiring manager, and I read that, I would never even look at your resume.
You get a monkey for that one

Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Kevin Zhang

As a General Manager and the one in charge of hiring, I was looking for the end of the letter about 1/2 way through it.

What was said about the buzz words can not be emphasised enough! If it's buzzing I look closer.

You use a semicolon to separate the bullets in the bottom half....either add them to the top ones or remove all together.

Words like proficient, skilled, and qualified make me frown...this means you have a basic understandin or have doen it before but may not remember it too well. Let us know what it is you can do and that you are damn good at it...it will get you hired and wont foster higher expectations once you are hired...just keeps the resume out of the round file if you know what I mean.

So if it were shorter and more direct I would most likely keep it in the "to-call" pile.

To tell you the truth this doesn't matter so much these days.

I would much rather hire someone who has had experience in a real job than someone fresh out of school. If you have what they call "equivilant experience" they will overlook the schooling.

Not only has this proven true for myself, but I learned it from a recruiter from IBM at a job fair I went to.

Also, when submitting a resume it seems standard to place education at the top. This no loner applies. A majority of big name companies as well as others will skip this section and look straight to what you have done, and what interests you have outside of work. Then if they have you tied with some other candidate(s) they will use education to refine their choices.

Kevin,

Could you email me your resume so I can forward it to my HR person? I work for a software comp. here in SF and we are just about to hire another MIS help desk person. All I can do is get your resume in to HR. Times are tough, we have experienced developers working as tech. support people. But anyway, best of luck to you!

email to: macao_friend"at"yahoo.com

BTW, anyone work for the video games industry? How come it's so damn hard to get in?

I fowarded your resume to the MIS director directly, beats going through HR at this point. But I haven't heard from him...so good luck.
