Near miss tonight

Hopped on the onramp to 85 by my house tonight and decided to test my new rallitek rear sway with a little 'spirited' driving. The guy next to me in an eclipse goes to race me through the turn to beat me where it narrows down to 1 lane. (i don't give a crap if he wins, i was just enjoying the lack of body roll with the new bar) His car is like a foot away from my door through the turn when I hear his tires loose all traction. The guy looses the rear end then over corrects and comes back across the lane behind me. At this point we are almost on 85 and he is spinning around headed towards the freeway. Just about the time I think this dude is going to spin off the onramp into full speed freeway traffic he gets it to a stop on the shoulder going the wrong way facing traffic on 85. Glad he didn't hurt anyone , or hit my car. Be safe out there!

just be glad he didn't kill himself because the cops would have blamed you for "racing" him

Dude, let this be a lesson to you! If you're going to do this sort of thing make sure that NO ONE is around and that there is no potential for that kind of fail. I know we can't all go to race tracks every time we want to test our cars a little because we all do it (drive spiritedly on public roads), but at least do it in a way that is safe for you, and safe for EVERYONE else no matter what.

Sounds like you were trying to race him through that turn instead of letting up and letting him pass, and that's a bad idea man... I don't mean to lecture you or anything, but when someone does that (comes at you trying to race), just let them go... It's either that (letting it go) or facing some seriously DANGEROUS consequences, all for what?

Like I said, we all drive spiritedly on public roads and freeway on-ramps are my personal weakness and I ALWAYS take them faster then the law allows when I find an empty ramp, but I know my limits and wont push it past what I can do, and I def don't do it when someone else is trying to race me on the said ramp! I've had people try it and I just let them go, and usually they do something bad and screw up, then they feel like total IDIOTS and you get to laugh at them and still be the bigger man.

Regarding your sway bar... This is going to lead to more and more suspension mods since suspension is the funnest aspect of tuning a car. When you go out there and want to drive spiritedly, just let the ricer go ahead and do his thing, don't involve yourself with that kind of idiocy. If you guys wreck (even a small one), you run the risk of death or injury, and you run the risk of getting NAILED by the police for street racing (I know you didnt call it racing, but it was racing, especially in the eyes of a cop, and thats the last thing anyone needs.)

Next time just remember the old saying: "Hit the brakes and he'll fly right by". Can anyone tell me where that quote is from?

Bingo. The cops would have RAILED you for street racing, and imagine if he would have gotten hurt and then lied and said YOU were the one who tried to race him and made him wreck! It's his word against yours and you're not coming out of that unscathed. He will do whatever he can to get himself out of trouble and blaming you for everything is what he will do, it happens every time and I've seen it happen before!

I was on an onramp behind two civics, one modded heavily, and the other lightly modded. The lightly modded on floors it and tries to pass the other civic on teh outside of the ramp, but instead of passing him he hit the guard rail then bounced into the heavily modded (innocent) civic which in turn caused him to crash. I watch it all happen, and lucky everyone was ok. I stuck around to tell the cops what happened, and lucky for the innocent driver I was able to provide an eye witness account of what happened. The aggressive drive tried to blame the innocent one for bumping him into the guard rail even though he was just driving normal and not racing at all. If I wasn't there the innocent guy would have gotten SCREWED. This could be you because those ricers don't give a rats *** about you, they will lie and cry their way out of anything they can regardless of what happens to you.

Now imagine if he would have DIED (guy racing), the innocent driver would have gotten so screwed and probably face manslaughter charges since he was "most likely racing" in the cop's eyes, and if there is no witness, it's your word against all the signs that point to him racing, especially since his car was modified... Cops say they don't do this, but they totally discriminate against modifed cars and will group us in with all the ricers and street racers. They will use the fact that your car is modded aginst you in court because they must mean that you race, why else would you have "racing" or "performance" parts on your car? They will pick you apart and you WILL go to jail, all for what? By racing, you're increasing the chances of this happening ten fold, so why take chances? You run enough risk out there by just driving normal (like what I witnessed), but once you start increasing speed you increase the danger and unpredictability of the situation.

In short: Make sure you're alone and that NO ONE is in ANY kind of danger in the case of any kind of accident. (You have to think of any possible scenario and make sure that you can't hurt anyone regardless of what might happen).

Good luck with the car and enjoy the new addiction to the wonderful world of suspension!

I think that quote is from "Top Gun" maybe? Anyways I'm glad nothing happened to u or the person driving the eclipse. It's hard when some idiot is trying to race u and u can take em. Like everyone's advice, slow down, brake, or something n just let them pass.

So what's your future mods for the car?

It's a near hit. A collision is a near miss.

I had a similar event on an 85/Almaden (?) clover. It's a 2 into 1 lane roundabout, and I'm in my RX7 on the inside lane of what I thought was an empty onramp. All of the sudden I see a black civic come flying by on the left carpool lane, trying to pass me before the merge. He suddenly losses traction and slides into the far left concrete divider wall, with his rear tire coming to a rest straddling the wall. I wasn't racing/speeding, and I didn't even see him until it was too late. This guy probably thought he was going to show me his superior driving skills but ended up in a major fail. I felt bad for him, but he was driving like an idiot.

Some people just get that chase mentality. They see a nice/fast car and they want to show you how their car is faster and how much of a better driver they are. I drive my wife's SUV on Friday/Saturday nights instead of the wrx/rx7 because I get tired of people giving me thumbs down for not stop light racing. Lawrence EXP is particularly painful to drive with all the jackasses driving crazy. I guess what I'm trying to say is that just driving a wrx/sti is enough to incite some people to drive crazy around you. Just be sure to make good decisions.

i'm not an advocate of street racing , it was just a random thing me hitting my favorite onramp and wanting to check body roll and handling and having a moron try and race me and lose control of his car , i raced miatas and rx7's in scca and nasa from 98-05 and learned to save the real fun for the track

hmmm. i think it would be a near hit, you almost hit but did not. a near miss means you almost didnt miss, in short hit.

that is kind of a stupid saying come to think about it.
