mygod... electric locks are stupid
earlier today i moved the audi tt out of the garage because i wanted to do some stuff with the wrx out of the rain. i had to jump start the TT because it hasn't been moved for 8 months. after backed it out and moved my car into the garage i reparked the TT in the driveway (blocking the garage). i left it running for an hour or so as i worked on my car.
as i finshed everything up on my car i went to the TT and pulled the keys out; but, before i got out of the car i wanted to see if it could start under its own power. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK... no start. blah needs new batt i think. didn't feel like rejumpping the car and moving it back in so i said F it... i'll do it when i need my car.
(hours later)
i'm in the shower washing all 2000parts. as i got to part 896 i realized... oh ****... are the locks on there electric? so i jumpped out of the shower and ran out with the keys to the TT. i hit the unlock button. nothing happens.... i hit it again... nothing happens. i hit it again for the 3rd time boop....... (weaker) boop... unlocks. yippy! pulled out the jumppers and moved it back into the garage.
if the door didn't open i don't know how i woulda gotten it unlocked.
electric locks... STUPID!.

never really looked at them.
okay... just googled a few TT pics. they show keyholes in the doorhandles.
can you unlock the lock via the keys?
even my 90 toyota truck that came with electric door locks, can be opened even when there's no battery.
i mean it would be silly of them to depend on a solenoid to push that lock plunger.
my toyota truck (and i think on my STi also) the electric door locks are a secondary way to unlock the doors. primary is still the key into the keyhole.
granted the security system may or may not be linked to that...

it has key holes but the locking mechanism isn't mechanical. theres electic motors that move the locks open and close. most newer euro and luxury cars have this now adays.

Are you sure they aren't pneumatic? A lot of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc systems are.
Ah, after '01 they were changed to electric. Run by the convenience unit. No matter... you should still be able to lock and unlock the doors with the key even if there is NO power. Try disconnecting the battery and using the key. They'll still work. Wouldn't make sense to design them otherwise.

oh? i'll check that out some other time... but if thats the case then electric locks arn't that stupid. i was just thinking eclectic locks had that design flaw. maybe i was wrong.
