saw you on 680 and rolled with you from walnut creek to danville. I was in the grey Altima. Kept looking over to give you the peace, but you never looked over.

Both roads were just small turn off's on highway 97, there literally have to be hundreds of dirt turnoffs down that freeway. I went down a couple the turned out to be only 30 yards long that dead ended into a round about that they parked construction tractors on.
But the Fire-road with the reddish dirt turned out to be an old wood chippers road that went for miles and miles, that road was Incredible!! It had to be groomed back in the day. There were No rocks, not too much dust, and I had to be on it for 15-20miles before I decided I didn't have the gas to go any further and make it back to town.
as the title states, the trip was EPIC, and im dieing to try and get my girlfriends dad to let me go up there with a few i clubbers for a weekend to check this stuff out!
As for the wheels, 18x8.5 +44 flat black grids

Volkey how bad was the wash after. Did dust get into your vents and interior en$hit? Have you checked your intake? I'm just curious because I WILL take my car off road at least once while I have it. I guess it wouldn't be too bad if you were alone but if you were following somebody it's probably 10 times worse. Anyhoo, it still looks funadenamutha***a!
No offense dude... but you went out there by yourself?
Yiu coulda broke down and then what? Walk for hours to get help, if there is even...
One rule off roaders try to follow is don't go alone in the middle of no where by yourself...
Did you check if you had cell signal before venturing outthere by yourself? I don't mean rain your fun out there which from the pixs showed you did...
But since this looks like the first time going off road for you and your vehicle is untested and you may break down in the most worst possible places...

We used to do TSD rallies on a lot of those roads off 97 back when the Golden West ran out of Yreka, (2004-2006) you can easily do 300+ mile days with less than 20% of it paved out there... and maybe encounter 4 or 5 other vehicles, it really is an amazing area to explore.
The nice deal with that was you were with a group (well spread out a minute from each other for a lot of it) but with sweep and communications crews along as well.
Come to think of it- I used to write those by myself up there...but then again, even I don't go out without a HAM radio, a couple spare tires, tools and GPS- it is always better to have another vehicle along unless you really know where you're going.

Very good point Idivinag. Ive been guilty of this plenty of times. I use to ride trails a lot on my YZ and also have ventured into the ocean alone many times. I know each time I do I take a risk. I prepare as best I can but really nothing can prepare you for something freak. It's always good to let someone know where you're going and when you think you'll be back. I would tell my GF to expect me at such and such time.

Good words of advice, but I dont think I would ever NOT do this again just because I didnt have others with me. However, as I was saying in my first post, it would be a lot of fun to get a group to go up there.
As for the other post, YES!!! dust, dirt, sand and grime came alllll Through my vents, my defroster, and every other hole in the car. It was pretty epic to have that much dirt on the outside, but you REEEEALLY should have seen the inside!

Going to get it washed today
If in doubt, FLAT OUT

I actually have a house in Red Bluff, about 1 1/2hrs south of Shasta and I'm going up all of next week. Will be spending some time up in Shasta and possibly Lassen also. There are SOOOO many great back roads up there.
There's a group that does something similar in Mendocino every year I think. I'm down to do a Shasta camping trip.

i dont mean to scare people to NOT have with their cars. but i just heard and experienced stuff like that.
remember james kim (of cnet) and his family in oregon? they drove a (the saab) wrx wagon. they thought that would get them through some forest snowy roads...
i know of a story of a mother and a son from las vegas (iirc) who went to take a simple drive in death valley. she followed the built in nav system in their minivan or suv. she said she followed what looked like a road on the nav screen. if it werent for a park ranger who spotted something reflecting a few days later... and found son died and mother on the verge of dying. their vehicle got stuck on the sandy "road" the nav system was a road ROAD...
heck even myself, early on my 4 wheeling years. i decided to go by MYSELF on a trail road in an ENCLOSED park area (hollister hills svra). i thought it was a popular trail. i got stuck. spent 1.5 hours trying to get unstuck (this was before i now have various tools and equipment to get myself unstuck from diff kinds of situations). finally another vehicle came through and i flagged them down. it took another half hour to get a few vehicles to get me free. and yes, i had a CB radio that couldnt reach anyone since i was a bottom of a valley and mountains and hills and trees were surrounding me...
i'm older now (and hopefully wiser). what i hope people get out of this thread is you need to think and use common sense.
just because you have the beauty of AWD it doesnt mean jack sometimes. in fact that might be the thing to get you into trouble...
