<----AWD Snow n00by

I know it's a dumb Q but our cars don't require chains in the snow correct? At least that was my assumption. I do also have tires rated for snow (Falken Ziex 512). Tomorrows my birthday and if I am lucky I am gonna take a trip to the snow. I only went through snow once in my STi and I had the stock potenza's so I went super slow and didn't even try to see what my car could do. Do I need to put the center diff in lock or just leave it in auto.

as long as you have snow tires you don't need chains. I think under extreme conditions you might still need chains, but i could be wrong

Regarless if you have AWD or not, if the weather looks like crap they'll make you put them on your car. I think on an awd car you're suppose to put them on the front tires. I believe by law you're suppose to carry chains in your car if you go through areas where it might be covered in snow. I maybe wrong though. It's better to be prepared. You don't want to be stuck in a spot where you end up paying double for a set of chains.

I hope you guys know that you aren't supposed to put "chains" on your cars.

You are supposed to use the CABLE type, not the chains on your car. This will allow traction without having a major difference in circumference.

thats odd because my grandparents live in tahoe and my granddad brags about how he NEVER has to put chains on their volvo. They go through the donnor pass a lot too so its not like they are never around chain control areas

You guys didn't know the must is FWD now? OMG! NEWBS!

I think I would die from laughing if I saw this.

Better yet, a civic with chains in the rear!

maybe he has a death wish??

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/tr...ize/chains.htm

If I have 4-wheel-drive, do I need to carry chains?

Yes. Even though weather conditions may not warrant the use of chains on 4-wheel-drive vehicles at a particular time, to enter a chain control area, you must have a set of chains (for one drive axle) for your vehicle in your possession. If conditions worsen or you have trouble controlling your vehicle, you must stop and install the chains.

or maybe he's almost 80 and crazy anyways. its not like I ever really believe things he says. Just find it odd that he can get through all the time without carrying chains.

He also quotes some guy on KGO that once said octane is a myth
