Muffler Q

So what does a new exhaust system do for your car over just getting a performance muffler?

I see mufflers advertised as adding 8-12 horsepower to your car....is this just BS? How does that work?

And if I were to get a new muffler, would it be compatible if I later wanted to redo the whole exhaust? What's a good one to get a keep?

thx

axle back's are all preference
if you only get axle back... you won't feel a lot of gain, but lots of new sound

save for a turbo back

im pretty sure most stuff is mix and match but im not completely sure on every company

Axleback mufflers are pretty much just for show and sound.
Catbacks will give you about 10 hp or so.
Turbobacks are the good stuff

You can build a turboback in increments if you wish: uppipe, downpipe, and catback.

Uppipe's after the turbo, right? And a turboback runs from the turbo to the exhaust tip, right? Or am I just crack-addled right now?

you're crack addled now
up pipe is before the turbo
down pipe + cat back = turbo back

Just a catback, you won't feel much of a difference over stock. Btw that picture, is it just for the muffler only? Where's the piping?

at the very least, go to a muffler shop and have them weld up an axle back that's compatable with the oem exhaust. That way, you can work toward a full turbo back eventually. Where in CA are you? If you're near Sacramento, I highly recommend Muffler Tech for custom work.

I live in SF

and I think a nice Catback is the farthest I'd ever go. Right now I just want a little performance boost...for fun. I don't care about Dyno-ing the car or racing it or whatever. Just wanna put a little money in it to make it my own.

By the time I'm done everything will be :

New alpine CD/MP3 stereo
Component speakers
Radar Detector
17" wheels
All whether tires
Uppipe install
ECU flash and tune
SUNROOF!

maybe when I have tons of money and nothing better to do with it I'll go for more power...but I think I'll be pretty damn happy with this
