MTB guys..question
Hey guys.
I've got my DS-1 for trails and what not but I'm gonna need a bike for urban.
I'm talking to a guy I know in New York about building me something custom. What do you guys think? Oh...and if anyone is interested his stuff is as good as it comes and I"m sure I can hook you up with a price less than his regular asking price.
Basically I'm thinking of building a rigid single speed 24/24 bike for pounding around in the city. Maybe some DJ from time to time. He's gonna build me the frame and the fork.
Right now I'm thinking 1.5 headtube. 4.75 inches long.
Top Tube length around 23 inches
Chainstay length around 16
Bottom bracket height around 12.5
seat tube angle around 71
Head tube between 69-70.
Simple build up. like a 39 tooth. profile 165 cranks. Whatever pedals I can get a hold of. 24/24 wheels. Single brake. Low profile BMX style bars. Short stem.
Either that or I'm gonna get a fully build ellsworth specialist and just take my time paying it off..if possible. Still waiting on that.
If I get John's frame I'll probably paint it satin black to match my caddy with some green flake pin stripes. Green hubs. Green stem. Black everything else.
What do you guys think?
My new commute is gonna consist of me riding Caltrain from Gilroy to SF then riding 1.5 uphill to my office. but hey...downhill back..haaa.

Sounds like a good set up. Like MVWRX i would go with some 4130 CroMo instead of Al. If you did go with an Al bike i think 6160 is better than 7005 for what you'll be using it for.
About the head tube, how many companies are making 1.5" headsets now? when i left the industry they were still being developed.

It will be steel. 100% sure on that.
few good companies are making 1.5's now. few companies making adapters so you can run a standard fork if need be. But I'll probably have a custom fork built for this frame. steel.
Egg Beaters? hells no bro. Maybe on a road bike or a cross country bike. They're good pedals. But I'm old school bmx. I'll have some flat shin busters on there. Clips are only for my road bike. And that's out of commission right now.

believe it or not Wellgo makes a bad *** pedal called the B-27. Its cheap, sealed, comfortable, and girps like hell. I run it on all my bikes. I worked at a bike shop for 7 years and went through a million pedals but these things are worth taking a look at.

yeah custom is pricey but I get kind of a bro hook up on it.
Not sure how much that means yet. I know it's a decent chunk.
last I checked his frames run around $600. That's for steel. replaceable drop outs. Very very closely cut piping and great welding.
figure the ellsworth runs about $750....I should have my price on that in the next couple days.
if I can get a few people to buy his frames out here maybe he'd hook me up more. But I don't care about that really. I'd just like to see the kid get his due. He builds quality frames.
Here's a picture of one of them...with a 1.5. this one was $550. it's the 04 version.

another one...

I did say pounding and DJ's though. Meaning dirt jumps.
Basically I'm having him build me a giant bmx bike. Like a cruiser but slightly bigger and much beefier.

My friend rides the Azonic steal fram ( w/e its called) and he beats it up pretty well and its still in good shape. As for me when i ride (havent in a while) i just got a Giant xtc hardtail that is actaully doing alright for being a street dirtbjump frame.

lol... my giant VT1 can do jumps... granted, 5 inch travel is more of x-country territory though....
