Moving to Norcal from Virginia Beach.
Moving to Norcal from Virginia Beach.
Hey guys, my name is Rich, I don't really get on here much, but seeing as i'm moving to the Bay area I thought i would get in touch and see how it is out there. I will be moving to the union city area. I have been out to norcal a few times and liked it. I have been a east coast guy all my life. I grew up in Upstate NY, in the sticks and I then moved to virginia beach. I miss the mountains, and snow boarding and I feel like why not try the west coast, sure it expensive but I have a company i'm with the will transfer me. So why not?
I was planning on moving out with a friend, but she had some family issues and is unable to move. Now my options are to go out alone and barely make it by myself. I would much rather have a roommate so i'm able to live a little more comfortable (someone with a garage would be sweet). So does anyone need a roommate or can anyone suggest a reasonable area to live in that is in commuting distance of Union City. Im planning on coming out there at the end of march early april to find a place to live and hopefully meet with some potential roommates.
Thanks guys!

If safety/living near projects isn't a concern, then anywhere in the 510 is fine...san leandro, hayward, castro valley, fremont, union city are all better choices than living in oakland/east oakland in my opinion though...further south on 880 = safer, kind of haha...my brother moved from east oakland/san leandro to the border of sl/castro valley and I like it a lot better, castro valley is pretty nice...
However, 880 traffic during commute hours sucks so the closer you are to your work would be best if you hate traffic..union city is a fine area to live in..we've got a bunch of members in the 510, so you should get plenty opionions...good luck

congrats on coming out west hopefully you'll like it here. might wanna check out san mateo or foster city on the other side of the bay in addition to places already mentioned. it's not too terribly far (about 20 min or so) of a commute but you will have to pay bridge toll. i recently was looking for housing to rent and it seems like san mateo and foster city are fairly inexpensive and the neighborhoods are pretty good.
and as far as snow goes, you really aren't too far from it (especially if you'll be living off of 880)... it's only about a 3 hour drive away.
oh yeah and you'll have to excuse us for all the terrible drivers out in the bay area... hopefully that won't change your mind about coming here! lol

i guess i have lots of choices. haha Ideally the roommate idea is my choice right now. It would be nice to get out there not have to pinch pennies haha. Im just hoping i get lucky and am able to find someone willing to take in a roommate.
Im pretty quiet and a clean person. So im just hoping im able to find a place.

I think I just hate LA drivers.Anyways, I live in San Mateo and it's great and getting to Union isn't that bad just the toll may become an issue. But San Mateo can get pretty expensive.

carpool with a fastrak is 2.50...i think it may be $4 for people with fastrak, but otherwise, san mateo bridge is always $5...i used to drive it a lot, and it was always $5 if paying cash
Dude! Im in virginia beach right this moment. I fly back to norcal tomorrow afternoon so hit me up before then if you wanna talk in person. plus I would like to see your WRX

but nor cal is better than the east coast.
