motorcycle guys

what do you think of the GS500??
i LOVE open frame bikes.. like seriously love them.
i am looking to after the summer ends to start saving up for a bike thats semi cheap.. no more than 4k used.

not too worried about reliability.. as i plan on in a few years buying a ducati monster 750

these are some i am thinking of right now.. although i think the 2nd pic.. the buell might be too fast.. i just love that style bike.

and this will be my first bike.. so.. i don't want anything too powerful.

If its your first bike, you've got the right idea (not the buell)

I would say the GS500 or a ninja 500 (not an open frame) is a good starting point.

I have a KZ650 I will let go for cheap

i would consider it but my cousin would give me the hardest time for getting a kaw.

i wanna stick with suzuki, buell, ducati
im willing to pay some extra money on a ducati monster 600 if i can find one thats worth it. my cousin owns a ducati/buell/harley dealership in vegas and is going to eventually hook it up with a rad deal on a big monster.. but i wanna get good first. and i wanna be able to keep the bike in the end.

And if you want to go the suzuki route...I have my first bike, a GSXR 600, collecting dust. Good starter bike too. I'll let it go for cheap!

I would recommend the GS500. presonally i think it looks better then the Kawi. That was actually my first bike. It had around 40k miles on it and i put about 15k more miles on it without any problems.

The bike has plenty of speed for the highways and twisties. This was a great bike for the twisties, very nimble.

The bike is really easy to work on and they have a great community. GStwin.com. I sold the bike for a little more then i paid for because i fixed it up a little. I regret selling the bike. i could have kept it and tracked it.

you can get a GS500 2000 and above for really cheap.

A GSX-R 600 is not a good starter bike. Nor are any of the 600 super-sports.

The GS-500 and Ninja 250/500s are parallel twins with solid engines, easy-to-ride chassis and very steady behaviour. This makes them good starter bikes.

Next up the tree is the SV650. Still easy to ride, but more grunt.

Get the Buell. I'm a n00b looking to purchase my first bike within the next 6 months or so and Buell's what I'm shopping for. I've had many people tell me that Buells aren't bad starters because of their compact size, handling dynamics, and linear power delivery. Plus they look badass.

i was in the same boat as you when i was looking for a bike. So i went to the buell dealership and i test rode a buell.

yes the bike looks badass from the outside looking in, but you you look at it closer it looks pretty cheap.

The ride was pretty good, but if your a noob i would stay away. Its too easy to do a wheelie on a buell because of the shorter wheel base.

I will say this though........buy what you want to buy and dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

How is it not. It's compact, lightweight, handling is excellent, and has a good amount of power. What makes the sv650 any better than the GSXR? It's heavier, bigger, and most of all uglier. This is the bike that I learned on(gsxr) and would recommend it as a starter to anyone.

First bike should be something easy to handle, as well as something that you wont mind too much when you lay it down.. (hopefully not at high speeds, god forbid). If you can get a used bike, thats roughly 500-600cc's, like many have mentioned, it's a good starting point. I'm not sure how much riding you have done, but its good to have something easy to manage while you are getting a feel for riding. I dunno, just my two cents. I started riding on a gsxr600, it was a pretty fun bike to start off with.

Funny how, like nomex said about ford vs. chevy.. Theres always going to be that kinda of talk.. This is where names like -- Slow-zuki, Kawa-sucky, Kan-a-tuna (kantana), Yama-eww, or Hon-duhhh come into play lol.. i guess thats just how it goes. Good luck on your choice

I actually didn't like them much until I went and saw one in person. Go figure. Then again, I'm a fan of the hand built kinda goofy looking stuff, like TVR's. I know Buells may not be the wisest choice, but sportbikes aren't necessarily the wisest mode of transportation to begin with. Something about Buells just clicks with me.

The wheelie issue is a valid concern that I've heard from others as well. Though I've been told it's not nearly as much of an issue with the Firebolt's more foreword/lower set-up.
