Well, at 5:51am on Thursday Mars will be as close to Earth as it has been in tenths of thousands of years... I'm sure many of you already know this. Around 1:35am on Wednesday night and Thursday night Mars will be at its high point in our southern sky. Anyone up for a late night get together?

A coworker of mine has the same telescope as I do (a modest Meade ETX90, 3.5") took a quickie picture of Mars the other night and you could easily make out the southern polar ice caps, even in this crappy little pic!

Just seeing what the interest is... I'm thinking maybe Twin Peaks in San Francisco might be a good place or around Pacifica or Crystal Springs. Just some place not too close to the cost and someplace not north of too many lights.

Blargh, I hate to do this... I can't do the Mars party I woke up pretty ill this morning and left work at 10am. I was running to the can all night, etc. etc. etc. I'm dead tired, dehydrated and still not very, uh "solid".
