Looking for other "Jazz Music" appreciators

After working in a record store for eight years of my life i've come to injoy all types of music. But you may be surprised (or not) how hard it is to found "real" jazz fans. In all the record sales covering the globe, jazz makes up only 2% of thoses sales. And that's including that smooth jazz crap. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any other jazz fans on i-club. It takes alot of exposure to jazz before you can truely appreciate it. It took me years of listening to it here and there before i could truely "hear" it for what is was.

Mostly listen to late 50's through early 70's. Blue Note, Prestige, Riverside, Atlantic, Impulse recordings. Too many artists to man right now. Also listen to the new stuff, mostly coming out of New York and Europe.

If you are a fan, and then you should know how little of us are out there. Hopefully i'll find a few.

jazz is cool, a lot of jazz music is recorded on some of the best recording equipment out there. most of the real good jazz labels produce the cleanest, most accurate sounding cds available, i cant find any other labels to compete with the jazz ones.

I'm glad to see a few people have responded to my serch. I've been a hardcore jazz nut for a good seven years. In that time i've collected over 1400 jazz cds and are getting new ones all the time. My advice to HongKongBeef since you're just getting into it, is to start out mellow. listen to the standards and ballads.
1) Oscar Peterson (piano) : very tall (w. Milt Jackson)
2) Milt Jackson (vibes) : Mostly Duke
3) Kenny Burrell (guitar) : Midnight Blue
4) John Coltrane (tenor & soprano saxophone) : Ballads
5) Ben Webster (tenor saxophone): Meets Oscar Peterson
6) Lee Morgan (trumpet) : Candy
7) Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) : Ballads
8) Sonny Clark (piano) : Standards
9) Blue Mitchell (trumpet) : Blues Moods
10) Roy Hargrove (trumpet/flugelhorn) : Moment to Moment

After you take the time to listen to a mellower kind of jazz it's easy to start looking for the harder stuff. If people continue to post here i'll take the time to turn ya on to the good stuff.

What about some bass recommendations? I'd mostly like to know about older jazz since I'm pretty well informed on jazz fusion bassists and such.

Well Pleue there's lots of great basses out there over the years. Many of the best you'ld have a hard time finding them as leaders. But i'll give you a list to get ya started.

1) Paul Chambers (bass) : Whims of Chambers , Bass on Top....... Paul was one of the best ever but like so many musicians didn't live long. Played alot early on with Miles Davis in the 50's during the "Cookin" sessions, but never had much solo time until the 60's
2) Sam Jones (bass/cello) : The Soul Society..........Sam for me was the first basses to stand up and be counted. Playing with the Cannonball Adderly Quintet he really came on his own. Has several other leader recordings, but they are big band kind of thing.
3) Ron Carter (bass/cello) : Where? Ron Carter , Thrid Plane....... Played with everyone. Never really stuck to a style. And like P. Chambers he too was the basses Blue Note called anytime they needed a player. Unlike the other two he's still alive and making great music. Most of Ron's best was not on his leading albums ,but with others like Herbie Hancock etc...
4) Ray Drummond (bass) : 1.2.3.4. ........ He getting up there in age but is finally coming into his own as a powerhouse basses. Records with all the new cats on the east coast. But has spent this past summer playing all over Cali.
5) Jimmy Garrison (bass) : Just pick up any Coltrane while on Impulse and you'll see his name. great player
6) Channett Moffett (bass) : From the bay area. Best soloist i ever saw live. May have miss spelled first name. Has three albums as leader.
7) Reggie Workman (bass) : Most of his recording are from the 60's and 70's. Did alot with Coltrane, Blakey etc....

There are plenty of others but that's a good like to start with

Well, you have another one here. I mostly have albums though, oh the 12". My favorite artsist is Coltrane. I 've even read chasing the trane which is basically a hostorical view of his life. Other artist's include Monk, Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Bob James, Charlie Parker, Les McAnn, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, Ramsey Lewis, Etc.

It's a shame ,but i don't own any jazz on vinyl. I got into it long after i stopped collecting vinyl. There are still soooooo many old jazz recordings that have never come out on cd. Luckily i have two friends that still buy the 12" records often and find gems in the used bins.

Hey seven881 if you listen to Cannonball have you listened to his second quintet. It had Cannonball on (alto saxophone), Nat Adderley on (cornet), Yusef Lateef on ( flute, oboe & tenor saxophone), Sam Jones on (bass) and Louis Hayes on (drums). They released two of my all time favorite recordings ever. "Nippon Soul" and "Dizzy's Business". Both recorded live in Japan in the same week. Most the same weekend. Yusef Lateef is in my top 10 jazz guys period!!

another fan here. Comtemporary and Fusion are my likes. (Not to be confused with most of the smooth jazz crapulence on the radio. If you're considering Satellite radio, Sirius has 4 great stations including:

Planet Jazz
Jazz Cafe
Pure Jazz
and Swing Street

I have no problem finding people in the real world that like or love jazz. Most of my close friends are jazz fans. and i spend plenty of time at jazz clubs and shows. I was only wondering since i love jazz and cars "subarus" so much that maybe a few other people had the same intrests.

Keisatsu: bass and flute, right on. Flute along with the vibes is the two instruments that helped ease my into the whole jazz world. my favorite flute players are

1) Yusef Lateef
2) Eric Dolphy
3) James Spaulding
4) Herbie Mann
5) Hubert Laws
6) Jerome Richardson
there are some others but i just can't find the names in my head. My jazz collection is in the other room.
