Looking for new TV, need expert help

My mom wants to get my dad a new tv for V-day so i am helping her choose one as she is clueless on technology.

Anyways, I am looking for a 42" due to limitations on where it will sit. Will be viewed from about 9 feet so I think that 42" is a good size anyways.

This is the one i was looking at, however sceptical about LG TV's.

Any input is appreciated

At most $1200-1300, would like to buy from Best Buy as we have some left over gift cards.

Well, a friend of mine who used to work at Best Buy not long ago and specialized in TVs told me I should really only look at Sony and Samsung, as those, in his opinion, were the two best brands. $1200 to 13 should get you a pretty decent new 42 LCD from either one of those brands, and a top of the line one with money left over if you look at other brands, eg Dynex. Any specific features you are looking for?

If you are going to by that LG, buy it from there. Save the money, including the tax.

What I like about the LGs, esp this one, is the features for people like your parents. Netflix and Youtube streaming is built in. Find a way to get internet to that TV, and they will pretty happy with the content. If they are crazy sticklers for Picture/Audio, they will be VERY happy with that TV. I'd love it in my bedroom, not quite my taste for my living room. (have a 58" plasma, AVR, 6.1 surround etc..)

Best thing is, if he doesn't like it, if it doesn't work out, contact amazon within 30days, tell them it's broken and you want a refund... they'll come pick it up.

First off thanks for the input.

My dad has a netflix account and already streams to a HTPC w/ blu-ray that i made for him but he stated that he wanted it built in to the TV to get rid of the hassle of running the PC to stream netflix.

The 120hz is a must because of the amount of sports that he will watch, mostly sharks games in HD.

As far as being a stickler for picture quality, anything would be a big leap over the 5yr old samsung DLP.

I have Giftcards for Best Buy that need to be used so im just going to pick it up through them.

Thanks again

Just stay away from Sharp and Samsung. Sharps since 2007 are over priced and just not on par.

Samsung have a solid middle line up like the A650/A750. Their upper models are very pricey, esp the LEDs. I just don't see the value there in today's market. The 8100 and newer are definitely great TVs, but, I'd rather buy a CFL Backlight LCD.

Or a plasma, cause they are cheap now, stupid cheap, and nearly all plasmas look great, lol.

Looking at what he wants, the LG looks to be a great choice.

At 9' viewing distance, you could go 46"-50" 1080P, IMO.

Sony and Samsung are made in the same factory, so your basically getting the same television with either of those companies. Any korean company (LG...cough...cough) makes good stuff. My buddy works at Magnolia Hi-fi and he said you cant go wrong with any of the established brands these days...NO VIZIO! Good luck and enjoy your new tube.
