Even slotted and blanks will develop hairline cracks after time, it just depends on how hard you are on the brakes. I was always taught to use the gears not the brakes to slow down so I tend to be pretty easy on them.

I was taught the opposite of that, at least for our 5spd. Brakes are cheaper than gears/syncros.

+1
I never brake with my 5spd. Unless I'm cornering, downshifting hardly seems worth it.

How can downshifting slow you down as fast as braking? Are you talking daily driving or enthusiastic driving?

Its called looking ahead as you should be. Scanning for brake lights 5-10 cars up, a quick glance to see if the crosswalk lights are blinking red, and so on. Things that will tip you off to a need to downshift and start your slowdown. Typically I don't have to jab on my brakes, I can just slip it down a gear, even in traffic, and let the motor do some work for me (compression braking)

On the syncro thing, I learned to drive on a straight cut 1951 IH 4x4 truck with a 3 on the tree, the clutch was just about useless. So I learned very early on how to heal/toe and rev match.

OK I thought you where saying to not use your brakes for spirited driving. Just cruising around I rarely use the brakes also. Its easy if you pay attention to what is going on around you!

I learned to drive in one of these:

Kids today just don't understand what real driving is. Driving a 3 ton truck, with no power steering, no power brakes, no hydrolic clutch, and a foot starter is a far different adventure from driving modern cars.

Well if you are going to nitpick I was driving a ford 8N tractor by the time I was 9, and taking my moms Land Cruiser wagon (72) during snow storms up to the neighbors house and back to get milk and such.
