Buddy of mine picked up a Miata for almost a ridiculous price and uses it as a cheap commuter. He loves it! I rode in it and I can see why. Simple, comfortable, handles great, and so far, very reliable. You won't be hauling anything big around in it though...

Impreza wagon, they are reliable as all hell, I had one I sold with 240k miles. I met up with the guy a year later and it was approaching 260k and still running great. Also you can carry tons of gear and with a few mods they can handle pretty well.

I wouldn't call the older wagons "cheap", since they are still somewhat expensive for major repairs and require similar maintenance as any other Subie, but they will definitely go forever. I really enjoy my N/A wagon and am looking for another one for a daily myself. The current one has 220K.

If its a daily driver, Id stay away from AWD cars and get a easy to work on car that gives excellent gas mileage. Miata, Del sol, Civic (coupe or hb), crx or golf. My forester is currently broken down and Im borrowing my dads 2000 cougar. Cant tell you how nice it is to fill up once every two weeks for 50$ instead of once a week for 60$.

Civic, Integra or something like that. Pretty easy to fix, but the problem with those is even worse than finding a good wagon because most of the inexpensive ones are abused and ghetto modded. The ones that are done well are going to be asking too much.
