A little advise on sti mods

Who can tell me for sure what the cure is for fuel cut when you put on a free flowing exhaust? I've already heard about porting the waste gate but is there anything else?

It's boost creep that induces the fuel cut, you get this when opening up the system to 3" and catless.

There are 4 ways to fix this.

1) Port out the wastegate
2) Switch to External wastegate
3) Get a better turbo
4) Leave the car stock

I hope this helps.

Gino had said that the porting would not help for sure. I was wondering if porting the waste gate and putting a fuel computer and boost controller in would you be able to prevent boost creep. Or is it all just a waist of time and the stock turbo is designed to not be tuned.???

yeah, all of what Mike said...

also, I have heard a couple people that have gotten theirs ported and still said it didnt cure all of the creep, I do though think that these ones might not have been ported thoroughly enough. I had a Deadbolt P+P'd VF39 and inspected it before installation and saw plenty more material that could have been safely removed. There is definitly a risk of removing too much material and not maintaining a proper seal so they might just error on the side of caution, but when I put on my VF34 I ported the wg myself and removed a bit more(and much cleaner!) and still left plenty of room to seal, no problems in 10K miles.

boost controlers will not cure boost creep since they do not do anything to make the wastegate any bigger

Well like anything sometimes you never know There have been cases where porting on the vf39 does not eliminate the boost creep but more often then not it does. It's a gamble hence Gino will not gaurentee it will work!

If your going to do a fair amount of mods on the car you may want to loose the vf39 anyway and go for something a little better suited (those greens go well with the meat )

Ok now this question is going to sound stupid as hell, but what is "green" and I think I have heard "red" as well. I like to think I'm pretty knowledgable with these cars, and what I don't know I can usally pick up. But I havn't ever seen this explained.

I think they're referring to the FP Green turbo.

I don't like that turbo because its only cooled by oil, but I know that it flows great.

For my STi, I was thinking along the lines of:

T3/T4 Hybrid
FMIC
Re-flash
Injectors & Pump
Full Exhaust

they're selling those oil/water now. I just ordered an oil/water FP 18G from Godspeed today and he had 20Gs there too

How are 90% of the T3/T4 cooled for the most part the only way to get one oil/water cooled is to have a T3/T4 built out with something like a GT30R cartiridge (that is how mine is setup) but nowadays your better off going straight GT30r and makeing the flange types on the up/dp for it as the newer housings are much more efficient due to them being designed for the GT30r center completely.

Yes we were all refering to the FP turbo's but I would not match one with an external wastegate due to the cost involved the only reason I suggested it was becuase it is a nicely sized turbo for the STI and has a wastegate built in that wont creep thus keeping the ordeal somewhat cheap.

If you were to go with an external wastegate setup I would suggest going with a GT30 or GT35 turbo setup as you will make much more power with that (GT30 for track/AutoX and GT35 for the Drag hounds).

Nah not at all mate, a ton of the T3/T4's nowadays are bastardized like mine (so you would see them with Oil and Water cooled), basically I had a none BB T3/T4 that was oil cooled to begin with and grenaded it within 4K (it was not as laggy as people would think without the BB though) When we took it off we decided to put have it rebuilt with a GT30r center so I could keep the uppipe and downpipe the way it was without changes (this was 2 years ago) since then the newer GT30 turbo's are way more effiecient that doing it the way I did mine.
