where you got to the point of install, or go to recovery console in the windows XP installation/repair, hit install... there will be another option within install that is repair.. use that one and all should be fine.

Install WinXP into another directory on the same drive. Then you can get over and grab all of your importand files. Then slick the drive and check for bad sectors.

If your drive is good, then reload windows and replace your programs.

It just sounds like windows took a $hit to me.

also, when you tried to use the recovery console to repair your windows install...the single digit that they are looking for IS a #1....basically what that is for, is IF you have a dual/triple/multiple boot system (more than one operating system) on the same computer...you have to tell the computer which windows install you want to repair....for example...it might say something like:

Which windows install would you like to repair?

1. Windows XP
2. Windows 2000 Pro
3. Windows 98
4.
5.......etc....

then the single character that you type is the # of the version of windows you are repairing....in your case would be #1 because you only have one operating system installed on your machine.

then the repair SHOULD start.....

Also, a good practice in a situation like this one....
if you can boot to the command prompt....make sure you format the Master boot record before you repair the install...("fdisk /mbr" is the syntax for this command)...just incase any Virii have infected it....(a MBR virus will survive a HD format) the MBR format only takes a second...so when you get the command prompt back, you can proceed with the repair...when you repair an install like that, it will rewrite the MBR after you have formatted it, and begun the repair.

I agree with Gagan -- install something (anything) on a second drive, then see if you can read your files, or anything, on the disk. If your HD is going bad, you may only get one shot to get your files.

Ever since my HD crashed about a year ago, I've been running two identically sized drives in my PC, with the second a once a month exact mirror of the first. If the first ever crashes, I just move the cable and at worst I've lost a few weeks worth of stuff. No OS reinstall or anything.

Edit: yeah, and after you've copied the files, do a virus check.

I don't see a system response plot anywhere on the Tom's Hardware guide. Do you even have a laser spectormeter?

Edit: raid on a Win box seems like a really good way to loose data!
