Just got back from a 2 week trip to Colorado, after the 2,600+ mile drive it averaged 21 mpg. That includes all the mountains, warming up daily for 10 min. and playing in the deep snow 
As for tuning, I've run Bill's tune for years, it does well and it's very torquey!
