The best thing you can do is be strong for your friend, and have hope. He will need the support of people that love him.
When I was 23 I was diagnosed with lymphoma, and the worst thing I had to experience was the effect my situation had on the people close to me. It tore me apart every time I saw that I was causing pain to my friends and family. Be upbeat when you're around him, good attitudes are infectious and healthy.
And don't smother him either. Sometimes people need to be alone.
As for his chances, his oncologist is the best source for that kind of information. If it's been over two weeks, that information should be in the hands of the family, so you should be asking them -- but not him.
PM me if you want, I have volunteered in the past helping cancer patients and families of cancer patients because of my own history with it. I'm more than willing to share my experiences with you, or anyone, that has to go through a situation like this.
