Johnny Carson retired on May 22, 1992, and was replaced by current host Jay Leno amid controversy. David Letterman not only wanted to move into that earlier time slot from his late night spot after The Tonight Show, but was considered by Carson and others as the natural successor[citation needed] (despite Leno having been Carson's permanent guest host for several years). Letterman, having had his heart set on the earlier time slot, left NBC and joined CBS. The Late Show with David Letterman, airing in the same slot, has been competing head to head against Leno's The Tonight Show ever since. Conan O'Brien slid into the late night time slot vacated by Letterman, and has himself enjoyed success.

i went to the tonight show once. it was awesome! one of my brother's friends was Kevin's Eubanks (sp) personal assistant so we got in for free. chilled in some room eatin all sorts of food and went to the audience shortly after.
i remember watching Johnny Carson when I was 5 or 6 years old with my dad every night. then jay leno...letterman was never as cool for me.

Conan appeals to me since he has that awkward, but comfortable with himself sort of comedy. Letterman's just not funny anymore. Jay Leno just comes off as an a-hole. As for Jimmy Fallon, he's just awkward. At least in one of the commercials for his show, he set Rachel Ray on fire. That gets some kind of merit.

I really only like Leno because he's a motorsports / car / motorcycle guy.
Letterman is also a motorsports guy, But he is also old school and has worked for where he is at. Also doesnt care about being fired and acts about it too. I do think he needs better writers, But dave can put a spin on anything.
O' Brian, He's got some funny stuff, I wonder if Andy will come home now.... lol
I watch Letterman, O'Brian, Then if nothing else is on Leno..

I cant wait for conan to take over the tonight show, is awkwardness is relatable and he is a very funny person. Jay leno to me was always a little a head of the game when compared to letterman i personally think.
