Red face Kartboy Short Shifter question

Just want to say thanks to MPJ for the sale and the knowledge on installing this shifter. It took me some time but finally got it installed over the weekend. It was my first time buying and going to MPJ and it was a good experience. Te SS makes a huge difference... I see why people love this mod

I do have one question about the Kartboy shifter. I did a search the last few days and did not find an answer. Someone told me that short shifters can screw/grind up your tranny. I think this is a long effect this but is it true that a SS slowly grinds down your gears without you knowing or hearing? I do hear grinding when I shift from 1st to 2nd from time to time.

Thanks in advance. I dont usually post threadsbut I do read the forums all the time.

Acording to tom@kartboy (the kartboy rep on these boards) this is a myth and the SS causes no damage. I would reccomend running a search to find where he explains why that is flase, or you could probably PM him at tom@kartboy.

The problem is the 5MT tranny, it truly is teh suck.

On my old '02 WRX, my tranny grinded into gears before and after the KB SS & bushing install.

One thing you should do is grind the shifter plate underneath the center console, because you'll see that the shifter will come into contact with it when you're in 1st. gear.

This will make it harder to shift into 1st., and it stresses the whole shifter mechanism.

or you can flip the plate and bend the clips, that way you don't have to cut anything.

Yep, bolts right up just have to bend the tabs up that end up in the front.

yes you can just flip that plate out, or just grind it down a little because it comes mighty close to the shift linkage (correct term?) when u put it into 1st gear. Not a real big problem, but for me it was pretty annoying having it grind the against that trim piece. Also, if you are experencing more and more gear grinding over time, try flushing the tranny oil. I just did that, and have about 24k miles on the car and i have not grinded since the oil change. Cant say that i'm positive it's the oil, but it sure seemed like it helped.

if we did the install, then we cut the plate so it will not interfere.

Most of the time your hands are quicker than your left foot and thus the grind ...otherwise no relation to tranny and SS kit.
