nah it wasn't a lucky shot, and this is a tricky and sneaky tech to defend against, the guy spun around so the loser automatically went for the back control, was gonna lock his hands around the waist...

... but BOOM!

So I need to put this in context for you fellas:

Spinning backfist is illegal in boxing, and muay thai:
- In boxing it is illegal to turn your back towards your opponent
- In muay thai it's just an explicitly illegal move under international rules. Dunno about full Thai rules

So that's one reason why the spinning backfist is so effective in MMA when it's timed right. People who learn their striking around boxing, muay thai aren't going to be prepared.

See even if this move was allowed in Muay Thai it wouldn't be that effective with peoples' hands up all the time. But this is one of the really interesting aspects about MMA - moves that used to be BS and ineffective are now suddenly effective Spinning backfist is one of them. Same with the superman punch and duck-jab to a kneepick, or faking a takedown to overhand right.

MMA is beautiful the way martial arts were meant to be

I think that one of the reasons that the strike became "suddenly effective" is because the other guy didn't expect it. Kinda like a primitive tool being used nowadays. The fact that he straight up moved in for control makes it look like he had no idea he would use it.

Ouch! That was LOUD!

When I was really into kung fu and practiced almost every day, my friend Kevin and I were sparring with some boxing gloves with some head gear on (it wasn't thick head gear though)... Anyway, as we're sparring I let out a spinning back fist on him, and I guess I connected just right because he went down, and down HARD. It's crazy how much leverage you get with that strike! I felt sooo bad since he was one of my best friends... We still talk about it to this day, and that was a good 12 or so years ago.

That guy's strike was way more violent then the one my friend and I experienced, I can't imagine how much that's going to hurt later! My friend was hurting for a couple days after and we had padded gloves and head gear! Yikes

yeah, and that's why mma's becoming more and more exciting. For a while everybody had the same wrestling, the same jiujitsu, the same striking.

Now people are throwing everything but the kitchen sink to get an edge

Yeah, exactly. People train for moves that people use commonly, this is one of the primitive strikes that no one thinks about anymore... That's about to change though. That strike has always been used as a sort of surprise move when guys have their guard down, looks like it worked!

You guys are right, if he kept his hands up he wouldn't have went down like that.
