Just my luck

What's up fam. I know the symmetrical awd for subies makes it tricky for wheel replacement so wanted get just confirm what I'm pretty sure I already know.

Long story short... Rough week. My mom was rushed to ER (she's much better and back home now ). On my way there I managed to run over a razor blade which sliced a 1.5-2" gap! Of course I didn't opt for road hazard for the wheels so now I'm sure I'll have to replace the whole set.

The tires have 8/32 wear on em (out of the 10/32 they start with). Feedback?

Shaved is good. And on the tire too.

A little far, but I know Roger Kraus in Castro Valley shaves tires. Had to get it done for my step-sister's forester. Came out fine.

Affirmative.

Hell, if it's within 2/32nds of each other, it's within Subaru's spec, so I wouldn't worry about shaving the new one. You're basically just throwing out usable tread life.

Unshaved can be okay too.

For the record, Custom Alignment in Mountain View does tire shaving on site.
They are a tirerack approved installer as well

Lol, is it really that bad? I am riding on a set of wheels, one pair with 90% tread and the rear pair with 50%. Been doing that for 2 months now under hard driving, no problem
Of course, mine are in pairs and yours is not, but I feel like shaving your tires would be a waste of perfectly good tread

On the other hand, glad to see your mom is doing okay now

Your going to mess up your drivetrain. I have a pair of tires with 90% and my other pair had very low tread left. Just had to do it right and just buy a new set of tires.

Subie problems )-:

Seriously, Subaru has a factory spec of tires being within 2/32" of each other in tread depth. He stated that they are at 8/32, new is 10/32. So within spec, and you do not need to shave a new tire.

And yes, I have run bald tires alongside new tires. Not the best idea, but these drivetrains aren't made by Chevy.

What would you consider a "problem?" when the center diff blows out?

Don't mess with an uneven rolling radius on an AWD or you could damage your drivetrain. Go to Brandon Kraus at Roger Kraus racing in Castro Valley and he will identically match 1 tire for an awesome price. If you race tell him because he loves that (he's a touring car champion) and will hook you up.

Better safe than sorry. Even talking about tread depth tolerances can be deceptive. Just because two tires have the same tread depth does not mean they have the same diameter.

This ^ If you think shaving a tire to match isn't worth it, try pricing out a center diff. I had the center diff go out on my WRX. It may not happen quickly, but the longer you run it like that the more likely there will be damage.

As to the whole in spec aspect, I agree with that, but I'd have a shop verify the diameters of the actual new tire vs current just to make sure it isn't an issue because maybe you are lucky and don't need to shave it.
