(07-18) 15:54 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A Municipal Railway train rear ended another Muni vehicle at the West Portal Station Saturday afternoon, injuring a number of people, authorities said.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene following the crash, which occurred just before 3 p.m. when an L Taraval train rear ended a K Ingleside train near the boarding platform, said Muni spokesman Judson True. The impact of the crash shattered the front window of the K train and crumpled its steel nose.
True said there were multiple injuries, none believed to be life threatening. Witnesses said a number of people with head and neck injuries were being loaded onto gurneys and others were lined up, waiting for paramedics to evaluate them.
Both trains were headed in the outbound direction.
West Portal resident Laurel Paul, who was in the nearby public library when the accident occurred, said she and her son rushed outside after hearing the crash.
"There was a huge crowd gathering outside the station," she said. "I've been riding Muni since the 1970's, and I've never seen a train crumpled in the front with a shattered windshield."
The crash forced Muni to halt service in both directions in the area. Buses are providing service between the West Portal and Castro stations and between West Portal and the western side of the city.

in any case, i have some more updated 411 from credible sources (muni employees & an official). gonna keep most of it under wraps, as muni has been trying to do (unsuccessfully) but here's what i'll drop for now........
---the collision between the 2 railway cars was so violent that it was characterized by witnesses on the scene as, "an explosion!"
---40+ passengers transported to SF General for treatment
---they actually had to use a Muni bus for transport cuz there were so many injured!

there's more, but like i said, not really at liberty to circulate the skinny.
regardless, thoughts & prayers go out to the injured. small consolation, but people are gonna get dumb paid from all the lawsuits......The City def didn't need this to add to their already numerous woe$!

this is not a bad thing... the cab of almost any modern train is it's crumple zone. it's supposed to collapse in order to absorb the shock pulse of a crash. it's what keeps the riders (customers) from getting seriously injured.
