Does the phone turn on at all? Try holding the Power & HOME (bottom/middle button on the front) for 10 seconds.

The dock connectors like to go out on these. Its a fairly difficult fix if you don't have microelectronics knowledge

Could be the cable itself as well, older cables don't work with iPhones. Hopefully that's the case...

He's tried 3 different cables.

OP - borrow an iPod charger and see if it charges, no charge then its the iPod dock.

If the cables are eliminated as a variable, then next is to try another port on the computer and/or another machine. if it still doesn't work, then yeah its all bad.

It could be your computer does support USB 2.0. I built myself a gaming computer in 2000 and the computer cannot find iphones or anything like that and USB 2.0 things wouldnt work. I got a MacBook Pro and problem solved haha :]

Doesn't mean they weren't all older iPod cables.

my itouch actually had this problem. I have 3 of the same acer netbooks and it would work on 2 of them but no matter what i did it wouldnt work on the third one. So as stated above try a different system.

As recommended, check the dock/connector.

I was trying to restore my GF's 3rd gen iPod Touch on my computer using my friend's iPod Video 5G cable, no dice.

Tested the port by using my AC charger, detected the port. Proceeded to use my 5.5G iPod Video cable, and it worked!

I have a MacBook with the latest OSX, and a HackBook with the latest OSX too. I also own an iPhone - so I can try to help you out if you want to stop by sometime today. Just send me a PM or something.
