Insane new engine design.

Spherical internal combustion engine.

Hit mute on the video unless you are prepared for 5 minutes of 80's sitcom music.

Looks quite expensive to manufacure. Freaking curved pistons?

can someone with a degree in engineering please explain how this works. (using very small words please) It looks to me like the put an internal combustion engine inside an electric motor.

Looks pretty interesting. I'll have to read more about it.

Yes, though it says there are a number of variations, the basic intent is for it to function as a generator to provide electricity. Presumably to maintain charge on a plug-in electric vehicle. The main advantages being that it is quite compact and with fewer moving parts than a comparable combustion engine, it should be durable.

I completely agree with that. The music was pretty sick. I couldn't help but think about some old shows. The engine looks interesting, but not sure of its efficiency and how it works and cost to manufacture and maintain.

Four stroke counter rotating pistons in a spherical chamber rotating on the same bearing. Induction, compression, combustion, exhaust. Opposite on the other side. There is also a ball bearing attached to the top of each piston that, with the help of coils "swims" around the second axis generating electricity.

Should be cheaper to manufacture. The article says it consists of 62 parts to a typical engines ~240.

Yes, but some of the parts that need to be manufactured are far more complex and it will be more critical that they be correct than with a typical engine. Mass production may be more difficult, but I am sure that is something they can overcome.

Seems like it would be hard to keep the piston guide ***** sufficiently lubricated

Rotating combustion chambers...I see lots of issues with this design - not arguing it's efficient space design, but you are going to have a rotating combustion assembly...for example the injectors are going to have to fight the rotational velocity...if this does work, it's a great replacement for a gasoline engine driving an electric motor...but how do you seal the bearings in a constant rotating assembly that is "combustion hot"?

How are they cooling a generator enclosed combustion motor (?), I don't think this is going to be a production unit very soon....or else it will be very low power.
