Important Info on Ammunition
This came to be from a very experienced and connected contact...
In the last 10 months, most of the worlds ammunition company's have been bought up by two large conglomerates (ATK and Cerberus) and have been cutting costs drastically.
This sounds like a good thing, as it should translate to lower prices for the consumer... but it hasn't. Basically all this has done is toss quality control out the window.
I hate to say this as Federal HST's were my cartridge of choice for self defense for many years, but they apparently can no longer be depended on.
As it stands there are only two major ammunition company's out still putting out a decent self defense product.
Hornady and Black Hills Ammunition
Just so happens these company's are still independent.
Anything made more than a year ago is probably ok. I wouldn't be too concerned with plinking ammo as a failed cartridge just isn't that big of a deal. But in a self defense situation you need to have the ammo function perfectly on every shot. It seems most of the big names manufacturers can't deliver on that promise anymore.
Again, this is coming from a VERY well respected source and no I will not name-names.
