Cowboy Bebop, which is still running on Cartoon Network (but get the DVD's, it looks much better).

If you want 2 read some manga, you should check out Bleach, Hajime No Ippo (boxing anime), Yakitate Japan, Midori No Hibi, Love Hina, Battle Angel Alita series, etc.

I'll take a go at it, and might add some more as I remember:

Trigun
(Vision of) Escaflowne
Cowboy Bebop
Appleseed
Dominion Tank Police
Furi Kuri (aka FLCL)
Puni Puni Poemy
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D
classic Gundam
The Heroic Legend of Arislan
Riding Bean (OAV)
Mobile Police Patlabor
The Wings of Honneamise
Wangan Midnight (better than Initial D IMHO)
Fist of the North Star
Yu Yu Hakushou

That's all I can think of for now... I don't know if there was an anime of it, but the manga "Rokudenashi Blues" is one of my faves -- I learned to read Japanese with it!

<hardcore otaku impression>Before you respect the new school anime you must respect the old school anime!</hardcore otaku impression>

I'm only kidding....

Urusei Yatsura's a nice classic anime too if you love visual gags and a buncha innuendo, created by Rumiko Takahashi, who created Ranma and Inu Yasha. The early Miyazaki stuff is great. Nausicaa Valley of the Wind and Laputa: Castle in the Sky especially. The animation in those films are way ahead of their time. The original SDF: Macross is a total classic. Another nice series to check out is Ah! My Goddess by Kosuke Fujishima. It may seem sappy and normally I'm not too much into sappy stuff, but this one's good. There's a spin off of it called "Adventures of the Mini Goddesses" or something like that. I haven't kept up with American released DVD's in years. Oh yea, speaking of Kosuke Fujishima, check out his newer anime, eX-Driver. One of the main characters drive a 22B GC8 Impreza in the beginning of the series.

Oh yea, I also recommend Trigun. It's one of the better anime that came out in the past 4-5 years. If you liked the first Ghost in the Shell, you should check out episodes of "Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex". It's moreso based on the manga comic than the movie since Kusanagi looks more feminine in this one. :P A popular adventure/magical stuff/comedy series is Slayers. There's a good number of Slayers TV series and 2-3 movies. So I lost track after a while.

anime.mircx.com is your friend. Every anime released by fansubbing or raw WILL be released onto that site via an uploaded torrent.

My roomate is part of a fansubbing group so he's introduced these to me recently, which are all very good. These are all new anime of course (except hajime no ippo)

Samurai Champloo - hip hop samurai action
Hajime No Ippo - boxing anime
Monster - hospital drama; like ER except better/more engrossing plot
Midori No Hibe - comedy...have to watch it to get it...
Full Metal Alchemist - about alchemy and *** whooping.
Tenjo tenge - BADASS. A high school where everyone just fights eachother and goes DBZ on eachother all the time.

Had to dig this one up from the grave. Bleach is way better than Naruto. Still made by Jump, but the story line is just awesome.

I think Naruto is getting weird, I'm just waiting for them to catch up to the Manga.

Naruto Manga > Naruto Anime.

Probably the same for Bleach, but I don't know, I really don't feel like downloading all the Manga, hehehe.

uh there was some mention of DBZ, but in comparison to the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon BAll GT suck. The original is just soo cool and Goku is friggin awesome. So if you want some fairly old scshool anime, I suggest Dragon Ball.
