Dude, all you need to know is 6th STREET!! 
its a whole street full of bars and clubs and they close it to traffic on Fri-Sat night and its just a bunch of party kids running all over the place (three colleges in that town, so you know they party!)
We were there for a weekend about 5 years ago and it was seriously one of the best party weekends Ive had anywhere, and Ive done alot of partying in alot of places, believe me

Post up on nasioc TXIC section, there is a huge community in Austin, and they would know tons more info than people here.
BTW I am in the TXIC section only on nasioc cause I am currently in Dallas.
And you will definitely like Austin, it is the most similar city to CA in TX

i was there this summer and all i did was eat and walk around. but my friend that lives there also took me shooting and it was the best thing ever since they had a 100 yard lane that was indoors!

Austin is awesome for eating and partying.
Like what's mentioned already 6th street is THE place for bar crawling and tons of live music. Lots of good places to eat as well including Stubbs BBQ

I got back this morning and I had a lot of fun. We went to 6th street after the UT game and it was nuts. So many beautiful women every where. I heard Rudys was good but we somehow avoided it.
