Not really a NAS box, that is a mini server. It is set up to run windows home server or linux and act as a file server/domain controller for a small office/home setup.
However, not a bad price at all. You could toss 4, 4tb drives in it, raid 5(software as the hardware does not support) it, a very fast stripped down version of linux on it, and have a stupidly fast media server.

Yes, but I personally use it as a NAS. Installed FreeNAS with RaidZ2 configured on 4 drives. Well, I have N36L, not N54L. This one should be much faster.

Oh good call, FreeNAS I bet runs great on that thing. I just swapped out my windows home server box with 8 1TB drives to a Netgear ReadyNAS with 4 4tb drives and shut down my server. The media server in the living room is doing double duty as a domain controller now.

Yeah, FreeNAS is a good thing and more user friendly than a few years ago. RaidZ2 is a bit slow on N36L though... But I wanted a maximum data security. Had to install 8GB of RAM also.
I hear good things about Win server. But at the moment I don't need media server...
BTW, BIOS in those boxes can be hacked and you will have 6 full speed SATA ports instead of 4 plus 2 slow ones (CD-ROM bay SATA port and ESATA port at the back). So potentially one can use an optimum number of drives (6) for Raid6 or RaidZ2.
Cut almost $50 a month out of my electric bill.

freenas ftw. I have 6x 2TB drives in a raidz2 but am out of space with only 7.1TB avail.
Will probably need to wait though since I'm saving for a house and just bought a TV and just started getting addicted to quadcopters.

The WD red 6tb drives are down to 240, and the same 3tb are under 100 now.
I've got one of the earlier (just a slower CPU) of these. Been running great for a few years as a general home server with Ubuntu and bunch of drives in it. Running Subsonic and Mediatomb for streaming, Samba shares, even MythTV with an extra graphics card dropped in. Very useful little box.

I'm surprised they are still in-stock and not sold out completely. I bought one too.
