If you havea high horsepower computer...
Just thought I'd pass this bit of information on as it's not in my general list of things to check (it is now)...
My computer has crashed (as in hard crash, no blue screen the system just restarts on its own) 4 times in the last month which raised a flag as it hasn't crashed once in 2 years. For some reason I felt like checking the hardware monitor today and my eyes popped out of my head... the processor temp was at 69° celsius, defnitely out of the safe range for an Athlon processor. I checked my heat sync to make sure it was secure and I found that it was caked with dust. I put a nozzle on my air tank that I use for autoxing and gave it a good cleaning. The temp has now dropped down to 43° celsius which is definitely within the safe zone. I'm hoping this solves my crashing problems. Anyhow I just thought I'd pass that on as it's generally not the first place one looks when their computer crashes.
Cheers, Joe

Where do you get that much dust from, are your walls and ceilings carpeted?

lol.. no, its just that I dont want any buildup. Any extra dust on the surfaces of the heat-sink will cause bad head disipation
my main Athlon box is an xp1800 (1.53 ghz) that runs at 1.9ghz.. so for me every degree of temperature makes a difference

Take a look at what kind of services that you have running in the background.
What OS are you running. You can go into MSCONFIG and take a look at what you have running on startup. WIN2K is a little more complicated.
Also, is your system bus at 100 or 133? What is it supposed to be?
Clean up your temporary internet folders too. Maybe run a defrag...
It could be any number of things.

Some of the more modern BIOSes allow you to check your operating parameters from the BIOS. Otherwise, there is some software that is freeware that will let you monitor this stuff as well.

If you right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage" and then click on services, there is a whole slough of services that are running.
There is a website that details the services and what they mean (Some dude with WAY too much time on his hands researched all of the services for XP) and wich ones you can shut off. There are alot of them that don't need to be running.
Here it is: www.blackviper.com
How about your process tree? I know that sometimes my CPU hangs up on "System Idle".
Good luck. It should not be doing that to you. It is too fast to be bogging down.
