I want to get a DVD player that can play European DVDs, anyone know how?
My parents brought back a bunch of Croatian comedy DVDs from Croatia during their last trip only to find out that none of our DVD players play these discs (non-computer DVD player).
What do I need to look for? I know there are different formats but I dont know the names of them. It's so dumb how DVDs aren't universal... SO STUPID.
I want to buy one for my parents and was hoping that someone could push me into the right direction... I know we have fellow foreigners onboard, I know I'm not the only person who immigrated here. We need our homeland entertainment dammit and the DVD ****'s aren't allowing me to watch what I need!
Help a brother out!

Go to an Asian video store and buy an "Open Region" DVD player. DVD's have region codes that prevent them from being played outside of their geographical region; it was Sony's idea to maximize profit on the format. Are you sure you didn't know this already?

I just want to buy one that works and will play multiple formats reliably. Is the asian store really the best idea? Isnt that stuff junk?

PS: Ive been meaning to post this for weeks and could have sworn I did start a thread like a week ago and totally forgot about it until now and I went back to check if I did actually create and publish a new thread or if I just imagined it in a dream or something... Sure enough, it doesn't exist and it was a dream... Weird eh? lol
My dreams are very VIVID. Not in the **** kind of vivid, but I mean they are VERY realistic and I remember them very well.

+1 have the same one.
Bought it at Target a few years ago. They probably don't sell it anymore at Target but u can find it on Amazon.
It's locked onto Region 1 but there's a little trick to make it play all region. Just look up online for the trick. It only requires a push of a button for like several seconds and that's it.

It's like shopping at Best Buy or any other retailer: there are different models available for different prices. If you want to be more sure about quality without doing any research, try buying one of the open region models from a Japanese video store, or one of the more professionally-run Chinese video stores (a quality, reliable player should run you less than $100).
If in doubt, FLAT OUT

$100 is actually a lot for a decent DVD player these days, even a region free one IMO.
I'd actually say look for a used Oppo (970, 971, or older?) since many of the older models had a simple code unlock to run region free and they are also very decent players.

if you have a DVD/CD Rom you can just play it right through your computer.
