I actually like the ribbon UI more than the toolbar crap from previous versions.

The toolbar stuff it was too easy to accidentally drag and rearrange the workspace. My OCD hated that.

Though, I will admit now everything is rearranged and hard to find.

Notepad or VI or Edit

if that doesnt fit the bill, go and get some OpenOffice.

I'm still feeling open office. But yeh, I hate word, but I hate it more when people want me to use word, not necessarily just to **** me off (although I sometimes wonder), but so they can take it home, try to make edits because they have word on their computer, then bring me back the funked up file that needs to be re-typeset...all because they wanted to save a few bucks and not have to bring back to me for edits...

in openoffice you can save your files to .doc format. the only real issue i've seen is that openoffice does NOT handle drop down menus. other than that, no issues to speak of.
