You'll probably call me a wimp, but still, this sucks.
Living in a new home at the edge of a field has had some disadvantages. One of those manifested itself in the form of a mouse living in our garage. For some reason, it took a particular liking to our lawn mower and lived under it.
Over the weekend I installed a weather stripping on the bottom of our door to keep the little guy out. I came home on Monday afternoon and the little bastard had clawed up my weather stripping and my door frame. My attempt had failed, or so I thought.
So I came home tonight and I was going to go to Home Depot and hook up some mouse traps. I accepted the fact that he would die, which was something I didn't want to do, but I'm tired of this guy living in our garage. So I get home and I'm checking his normal hiding places and as I go to check the lawn mower I see him.
I freeze - usually the mouse runs anytime we even think about getting near it, but this time it's frozen. It's almost as if it's...dead.
Turns out, I installed the weather stripping and he was IN the garage. The clawing on my door frame and weather stripping were his failed attempts to get OUT. Even though I was going to kill him anyway, and this made it easier, I feel bad that he starved and had to suffer a bit instead of dying instantly with the whip of cold steel.
As a side note, mice don't live too long without food. Sheesh, even we can last a few weeks without food and at least 5 days or so without water, he croaked nearly overnight. Anyway, I feel bad he suffered, but I feel worse that I, of course, was the one who had to pick him up with a shovel and put him in the garbage can. Thankfully garbage day is two days away!

I highly doubt he died from starvation. If he really was that hungry he would have made a dash for it when the garage was open. They can last a few days with no food, he would not have died that quick from it.
mice are rather resourcefull when it comes to stuff like that, he might have just been old

Like I said, I don't feel bad that he died, just the way I think he died..suffering. That just sucks, regardless of what you are (mouse or no).

Dude...If i had a dollar for every mouse I've killed in my research...um...well let's say I'd be able to buy a new turbo or something.

I feel bad on those things, also. I won't kill a spider when I see one, for instance. There is a reason they are there. He actually probably did die from laque of food/water or froze. Small animals like that must eat a lot of food to keep their body heat going. Your body keeps warm by the breaking of sugar molecules (energy in the form of heat). These little guys get cold really easily, so that is why they eat so much. Sort of like hummingbirds, also. They basically just eat pure sugar (nectar). They use so much energy, and they are small, they must consume a lot in return. It has a lot to do with the body volume to skin surface area ratio. Anyway, I'm going to shut up before I type up a speach on this....this is what happens when you are a biologist
No way he starved...and unless you've got an airtight garage, there's almost no way he could have been trapped inside, either...mice can fit through the tiniest cracks, and you can be sure there are at least 4-5 ways in and out of the garage that you don't know about.
So unless you bought Raid-brand weather stripping, I doubt you killed him.

We use to have rats in our house. I wanted to get them out as soon as possible. But once I set up the bread and mousetraps and saw them dead in it I felt bad.
But at least the food is safe!
