Has i-club been invaded by panzies? Ive been seeing posts about putting chains on for trips to Tahoe, absolute shock about off roading or doing donuts in the rain, WTF is going on??? I thought the main reasons we drive Subarus was to go off road and never worry about chains in the snow!

lol...
street car shouldnt really be a mudding car....or rallying car for that matter
if u built your subaru to do it, then fine that would be awesome. but taking a street car into the mud or other terrain stock, is just asking for having a POS car in 2-3 years of abuse. personally been there and done that. that's why i probably give **** to kids (members younger than me) going all crazy or thinking they can cause they have a subaru...
and about the chains...legally we are supposed to carry them, no harm in that, and yes you can get stuck even though you have a subaru.
(done that too, but i had come to a rest in 12+ inches of snow and had stock tires)

I felt pretty capable in my Outback... I mean Outbacks have a little more clearance than the Imprezas... I actually bottomed out my car once...
I miss that car...

The stock subie suspension is almost ideal for most dirt roads. I'm not saying we can hang with big built up trucks and go mudding and rock crawling, but we're plenty capable of tearing up some dirt roads with sizable ruts, dips, bumps, and even jumps. Hell I've gone out on dirt drives on lowering springs and struts and made it back without any broken parts. I've also gone out on stockish suspension and thrashed the hell out of the car, sliding around, hitting big ruts at speed, and even catching air on occasion. And to my surprise I made it back without a single broken part... it just goes to show that you don't really have to build the car up to have fun with it in the dirt. Note, I did lose a mud flap and a fender liner blasting through a creek once but it was well worth it

The problem is that most of the stuff we do to make our cars perform better on tarmac make off roading nearly impossible. That's why I usually keep my stock suspension around just in case a really nice dirt drive pops up
