hey bay peeps
so i am in the midst of finalizing the sale, and have decided to take it to the ref station and have it made smog legal.
the car if you are not familiar with it is a 00' RS with a 02' wrx motor in it. i have (or will have) all the stock parts to make it just like a stock wrx for the smog ref.
has anyone had experience with this? does anyone know who to contact or have a contact # to make an appointment with the smog refs?
any help is much appreciated. i am really excited about buying Calvins car(thanks Calvin!!!) and would like to get this part over as quickly as possible. i know the state is hard *** on these things, but i am confident that with the right parts (stock parrts) it should be pretty easy.
thanks
josh

I have no useful info for you
, but I just wanted to say "good luck". (knowing how much of a pain anything to do with smog can be)

I replied to your thread in the "other" board. (at least I assume that's you
)
But anyway, from what I understand, as long as the WRX Motor has all the standard smog equipment that comes on a WRX, you should have no problem at all.
But I'd ask i-speed to be sure.

Josh,
All you need to do is make a reservation with the Ref. You can find the number in the DMV Web page. Also, be prepared to provide paperwork that the engine was leagally bought from a dismantler. You should be able to get that from I-Speed as they did the conversion. If not, I may be able to get it from the dismantler that sold Cal the engine (I work about 2 miles from the yard). Cal may even have the paperwork......all it is, is a sales receipt from the dismantler with the VIN of the donor car on it.
If you have any Q's, give me a hollar.
Cheers
EddyL.

Like EddyRS said... Just look up the number for your nearest SMOG ref and make an appointment. Having swapped and reff'ed a couple Honda's I can say it is a pretty painless process. They just make sure everything is legit and then sniff it really quick and you're on your way. 38 dollars I think?

thanks for the info. that sounds pretty painless. i think i will get it all bone stock, and then all and make the appt.
the paperwork is interesting, but chris did say he could get that stuff for me without much issue. also, iprezer had offered up his VIN # as a substitution in the case that i needed one. but, i still think ispeed will more likely have the info.

yeah, you shold see the car alot more often. i like to drive

Actually you go to the califonia state web site (http://www.ca.gov/state/portal/myca_homepage.jsp) and look up info on smog state ref. Call the 1-8-- number and give them your location. They will schedule you for an apointment at the nearest place to you.
A few notes:
1. the may ask WHY you need a state ref.
just tell them..."my old engine blew and I am replacing it with a newer one.
2. They may ask for documentation or proof of the authenticity of the motor and swap.
We can give you paperwork if that is necessary.
you can also say that you got all parts at a junk yard.
Here is what the state ref looks for:
1. block code (ej20). because you told him it was a 2002 wrx transplant.
2. cats
3. O2 sensors
4. all emissions equip
5. they actually hook up/scan the ecu to make sure all things are ok and that it is a 2002 wrx ECU.
Oh yeah.... your car MUST be stock when you send it to them. The more stock or stock looking it is....the less hassle you will get.
Hope that helps

rock on chris
i'd love to get that paperwork from you if at all possible. i will email you about that tomorrow.
as for the other stuff, looks like it will be pretty easy to get it to pass. it is kinda a PITA, but it should still be pretty easy to swap the stock parts on for now, and to get this taken care of.
thanks for all the input!

TO ALL....
There is hope:
I passed my old OBS conversion with a ion turbo and jdm up pipe and ECUtek.
AND
We just recently (one day ago) passed the state ref with our JDM EJ20 WRX VIII AVCS engine, vf22, 565's, ECUtek. We of course had to splice the JDM harness with a USDM harness to compensate for all the emission crap. But we did it!
Man we ROCK
lol
